I am still thinking about replacing the secondary cats on my Gransport with decat pipes.

I wondered whether the larini decat boys had experienced any issues when informing your insurance company?

I was charged £30 or so when I replaced my exhaust system (including replacing the secondary cats with a sports version) though I think that was more an admin fee than an additional premium. That was Admiral.

I must add that when asked if it was performance enhancing i replied not to my knowledge .............nothing was proven and larini made no comment or guarantee as to any performance gains at that time other than noise enhancement

Cheers guys for the replies.

Changing the secondary cats to a different set, albiet sports cats, is less likely to be an issue than removing the cats. Has anyone removed the cats and then informed the insurance company?

I guess it depends on how picky/thorough a claim assessor is in the event that there's a claim. A de-cat system will generally not pass an MOT, they could then argue that the vehicle was not in a roadworthy condition which could affect a potential payout.

That said, when my Lotus had a de-cat pipe on it I mentioned it to Admiral, my insurance company at the time, and they didn't seem bothered and didn't charge any more.

I eventually swapped to a sports cat as I got a bit fed up with the amount of noise after a few years. It was fairly obnoxious, not that I realised until I let someone else drive it and heard it! It also meant that I couldn't get on track days as it was too loud. Now I've changed to a sports cat it's much quieter but the sound remains much the same.

Is it really worth the concern and hassle of swapping it back on for MOT and will you (or your neighbours!) be able to tolerate the noise?
And finally, louder isn't necessarily better (heresy, I know). Just my 2p.

I think there is fair difference between decatting a Lotus vs taking on the secondary cats off a Gransport. I have had the displeasure of being a passenger in a decatted Exige which sounded very uncultured so I fully understand how you could get sick of the Lotus exhaust.

Taking the secondary cats of a Gransport increases the volume to a tolerable level and you always have the option of making it quieter using the valve switch in the rear cans. I think the standard set up is just too quiet and I would like a little bit more noise on the overrun. However its all personal preference.
