Thought I'd bumpty-bump this as my insurance has just come around. Currently with Privilege and paid about £600 last year. This year they've more than doubled the excess to £1750 and increased the price to <insert drumroll> £1600!!!

I asked for a justification for a thousand quid price hike and the chap was quite honest and said "its well above my pay grade to be told these things", but assumed it was down to the perceived risk. Fortunately Admiral are offering it up at slightly less than my current price, in the mid-£500's.

To start what others have, car insurance companies do seem to want to take the proverbial at times.

As a follow on, a friend of mine bought his son a Suzuki Alto to learn on. Insurance was around £500 through Adrian Flux and they specifically said, once he's passed his test get in touch as the premium will come down (amazing for a 17 yr old, but ok you accept what they say). So, he got in touch and the price was over £4000!!! Needless to say he went elsewhere. AF I had heard are meant to be decent, but this is disgustingly sharp practice.

smacks of "I don't want the business...." type quote to me.

i think i am paying 360 fully comp, me only to drive. Direct line sent me a reminder for like £700 and i shopped around and what do you know direct line were cheapest at 360. So if i had just paid the reminder i would have paid double, that's the way to treat loyal customers! I am also with Admiral right now because they are cheapest, I don't think any insurance company deserve loyalty, they certainly don't give it to their customers. And the weird thing is they are getting better at actually paying out when stuff goes wrong, go figure.
While i am having a wee rant i should also add that the insurance market has got so competitive that no claims bonus is now obsolete. I run other cars and have separate policies on each with their own NCB. A nice man with a horse box decided to make my road to work into an obstacle course and i discovered that my Citroen was not an off road vehicle and was easily broken. it was a write off. 2nd accident in 2 years so in 18 months went form 60% no claims to Zero. Thought to myself my premium will sort of double or treble here, it was only £200 so hey ho. Guess what, got more or less same premium with Zero no claims as i did with 60% no claims.

Just renewed insurance for all our cars, Privilege came out by far the cheapest. Previously had an Admiral multi-car policy and renewal was about £900 for the Mas, Privilege got that down to £300! Admiral couldn't get close when I called, best they could do was £680. In total I saved £1000 by changing to Privilege from the renewal quote Admiral gave me for all three cars, very happy.

That just reinforces what a complete and total lottery it is, given that I'm going the other way from Privilege to Admiral, because of cost!

Perhaps I'm making the mistake of trying to deploy a little logic to an insurance company's thinking...

My insurance has been with Admiral who gave me a quote of just over £800 for both. I then confirmed that I had been on a speed awareness and the quote increased by 30%! When I pointed out that the idea was to make me a safer driver, they said it would have been even more if I had taken the points but I had still been caught speeding.

Generally, most insurers seem to ask if you have a conviction rather than been on a speed awareness so Admiral are making money out of this.

Privlege also seem to be cheapest at around £650 but with an £850 excess on the Mas.

I dont think a lot of Admiral, their multicar thing is rubbish, its cheaper to phone another insurer and ask them to quote as separate cars. I did this with Aplan, and was pleasantly surprised to bet my Alfa GT and the Maserati for £600 all in, much cheaper than the so call multi car from Admiral as that was £200 more.

A Plan are decent, I'm currently with Locktons and they paid out for a new bumper, hire car, recovery from France etc and raised the premium £30!!! I find putting a limited mileage helped reduce the premium a little.

I've had an identical experience with Admiral today. My multicar policy was due and they sent me a renewal figure that I thought was quite pricey for the 4 cars, almost £1,650 - definitely higher than the previous year. I did a couple of price comparisons and Direct Line seemed to be the best. I rang Admiral today to discuss their price and informed them that I had been on a 'safer driver' course. This information appeared to make them think that I should then be raped financially - the revised quote went up to just under £2,500!! The price on both GranSports went up by about £300 each! I told Admiral my views on their pricing and that I wouldn't be renewing. I then phoned Direct Line to go through the details of each car and to make sure I was getting the right price. The upshot is that I've just insured the 4 cars fully comp with protected no claims for £1,174 - all with a lower voluntary excess as well. Interestingly, DL do not ask about courses, just convictions.
