Why would you let your son drive your 180MPH missile, they just dont have the skill or experience to handle something like this. This was pulled out of some trees after coming off the road at 140MPH by a friend of mine. Luckily no one was seriously hurt but it shows young drivers dont have the correct attitude to drive powerful cars.

Most important thing is no one seriously hurt, our hobby should never endanger people. Shows how strong the body is. I remember seeing a 3200 that had rolled several times and the driver was unhurt, but the strength of the body is impressive. Yes if you are used to an Astra where its ok to keep your right foot on the floor all the time these cars are a bit of a culture shock.

Ouch! Glad no one was seriously hurt. Learning all the time on the road, not a " I can now drive." Lesson learnt I would say, just a pity he trashed a stunning car in the process.

140... bloody ****? Presumably as the lad is unhurt he will be able to explain exactly what kind of muppetry led him to act like that.

The NSW Government (Australia) has introduced prohibited vehicle and passenger conditions for provisional licences to keep novice drivers safe on our roads. The prohibited vehicle and passenger conditions are described below.

The prohibited vehicle condition restricts provisional (P1 and P2) drivers from driving certain high performance vehicles. The condition applies to provisional licences issued on or after 11 July 2005. The scheme aims to prohibit young driver access to vehicles that are overrepresented in young driver crashes.

Prohibited vehicles are those with:

Eight or more cylinders.
A turbocharged engine (except diesel).
A supercharged engine (except diesel).
Engine performance modifications that require an engineers' certificate.
Certain high performance six cylinder engine vehicles or other vehicles as described in the publication Novice Drivers - High Performance Vehicle Restrictions.

Why hasn't the UK govt introduced a similar law here?

Is there not also talk here of limiting the number of passengers new/young drivers can carry?

I guess we could all ask for legislation to prevent young or inexperienced drivers getting behind the wheel of a powerful car...but it surely has to be the responsibility of parents?...otherwise we may as well abdicated the raising of your kids to the state.

Twenty years ago hardly any 17year olds had a car...now its the norm...I was lucky enough to gain acess to a a 850cc Fiesta and thats all I could afford to insure on my wages...god I must be old.

It will be years before my daughter gets to drive any of the fast cars we have, and that's only partly due to the impossibility of insuring her. How could a young driver be insured on a powerful Maserati?

The phased tests for motorbikes seem sensible - pass a rudimentary test, ride a rudimentary bike. Pass a harder test, ride a more powerful bike. Arguably the test could focus more on more advanced riding techniques but that's beside the point, to my mind it makes sense to impose more stringent assessment or experience measures on people who want to drive fast cars. Insurance premiums are an excellent barrier and will keep my lads in slow cars for a few years (as they did for me) but there are always some who can afford to pay vast premiums to drive sports cars.

I think the Aussie approach makes perfect sense. I'd be interested to see what impact (sorry) it had on accident figures.
