It’s interesting, I’ve not driven an MCV, but I have owned and driven a lot of different GSs from 05 through to 08 registered cars. None of them had bad steering, but 2 of the very late GSs I have owned had steering that was verging on telepathic - as good as the best steering cars for feel I have driven, and I have owned Elises and Esprits. I had always put it down to them being lower mileage (less wear) and better set up, but was never totally convinced by that explanation because it was just so different. Makes me wonder whether Maserati changed the spec of the GS steering rack for the MCV and also fitted it to the very late cars. Would explain the fact that there doesn’t appear to be a different part number for the MCV rack.
That's likely.

There are 3 types of steering racks for M138.

  • 183766 (LHD) and 183767 (RHD)
These are for MY2002.
  • 195592 (LHD) and 195593 (RHD)

  • 207276 (LHD) and 207275 (RHD)

There is no record for when 207276 replaced 195592, 207275 replaced 195593. 207276 and 207275 may be the "better" racks.

If you jump from an 2005 plate GS straight into an MCV you certainly know the difference at the first roundabout. It is not subtle. I know this as I have done it and I am sure Dicky has several times also. Not sure of course if later GS and MVC shared the same rack. Also I am sure I have some Maserati blurb somewhere that actually mentions the rack on the MCV.

Perhaps @gemini you might be persuaded to take one for the many, and crawl under your MCV to identify the manufacturer and part number of your steering rack...? This could be the beginnings of a reverse engineering exercise to produce a modified rack to offer a more appealing character...?
We're all in this together...! ;)

I can do that.
But if it's the same part number, it will completely devaluate my MCV?!
Well, I don't care anyway.

The 10th anniversary is on the vessel somewhere near Gibraltar, the car should be here at the end of the month.
It will be interesting.

When @Nayf did the Modern Classics magazine article on my MC-V he interviewed Omar Barbieri who was Development Manager on the MC-V project, and he stated "The MC-V rack was a specific component produced by TRW."

He should know.

Well, right...!
Im thinking it'll have the TRW stamp and part/batch/serial ID number...

Im not convicned that an external inspection helps identify other than between the various superceded parts, if they even differ honestly; those stated above by EnZo...
Its spec that (only?)TRW would have..?
Who knows....?
This is what a standard 4200 looks like - they do at least carry a date stamp.76118

Yes, it belongs to Angelus, though not sure he's been on here for a while, regular member at TartanTarmac events as I think he's among the organisers.

It's Lee's car, some of you will know him from Le Mans 3 or 4 years ago as my passenger. Or as the guy I brought who you couldn't understand as he's from Lanark and his accent is strong! And those GS back boxes where mine.....

And yes, he's one of the organisers of Tartan Tarmac hence the sticker on the rear screen of his car.

So, I've checked the rack on my MCV.

And it's a 207276/
76131
DIS. TRW is 001288/
Date of prod 050706 (July 2006, how can it be 220409 on the TimR one's? Spare parts?)
Matricola : P2690103PU

So, it seems EnzO is right, the 207276 and 207275 are the late rack.
I will check on the 10th anniversary, but I suppose the car will have the same rack, as it's one of the latest gransport (manufactured in april 07!)

Wonder if it is the same rack on my 2007 4200 as always felt it was bloody sharp and quick.

There is a possibility that the rack is the same, but the control unit is different. Ferrari did this for the 550.
168034 for standard cars, 175891 for Fiorano Handling package.

Does anyone know the part number of the power steering control unit for GS/MCV? I couldn't find it.
I have always thought the power steering of 3200 and M138 is vehicle-speed sensitive, like ZF Servotronic used in Ferrari 550, but it seems it's not. Now it's no wonder why they are not considered to have a great steering feel.

Is it possible that the month and year are the other way around, like they do in the US etc?

Like "DISEGNO CLIENTE", the words are written in Italian, so it is natural to think the date is written in DDMMYY format used in Italy. Furthermore, the American format is MMDDYY, and the Japanese format is YYMMDD. DDYYMM is very unusual.

This is just an image i pulled from an eBay item...!
Isn't this a date stamp that annotates year ?
I ask because it is less than legible as it appears here...76135

They appear on all sorts of manufacturing...although it looks like it has been removed(?) on the MCV rack pictured above....

Since that stamp is cast, it may indicate the year of manufacture of the mold.

Afternoon all,

Just to add to the info - this is the plate on my 2006 GS:

76147

Unfortunately, not the best photo but is stamped 207275 - 080506B - 001289. The 'boss' is stamped 05 as can be seen.

To be honest I have always found the steering on my car to be very pleasant, sharp and agile - I only notice a difference coming from my Elise (with quick rack fitted!) which is not quite a fair comparison!

Hopefully this will be useful when we need to replace/refurb these in the future as Maserati don't seem that particularly arsed to look after their old cars....

Is this easy to access, no idea where it is located.

On the rack itself - it should be facing the front of the car, on the drivers side...?
Pic for ref...

Facing the back on mine (but it's a LHD) and partially covered by an heatshield.
Not too difficult to see.

Sorry, been busy and forgot to check the chat. Car is indeed mine and enjoyed the experience of him giving his opinion. I suppose a vanilla review doesn’t get many you tube views, so he has to point out some ( not quiet issues, but maybe in his option not 100%? ) talking points. The brakes are a set of Sports Maserati supplied discs and same manufacturer pads, which have only done 100 miles since fitting. I don’t race the car, so I’ve always thought they were good. I don’t have an issue with the steering? I came from Porsche, both 911 and 928, without the steering being an issue, so each to their own. If the car had been developed as the “perfect” car and everyone loved it, I wouldn’t be able to afford one. I love the car, can’t see me ever selling it, so happy with it‘s quirks and I love the car for them. :D
