Justifiction

Hi chaps,

I'm here again, been browsing the Maserati classifieds again and as ever (with me) it boils down to justification for spending the money in purchasing and running one.

I've found over recent years with my household income rising that my cringe point also rises but id be really interested to know from members and owners what % of their disposable income they commit to maserati ownership and how your ownership experience has changed from what your expectations were before purchase.

I'm currently swinging between downsizing (something like an Abarth 500) to upgrading to something with serious performance.

Which way i teeter depends largely on justification.

Cheers

Absolutely not got a clue, and I don't think I want to know. All I know is, if I'm still in the black by the end of the month then that'll do. I'm not frivolous with money, far from it, I only spend money where it's needed. I run one bike and two cars, have a mortgage that I'm paying a lot to so that I can get rid of it. I think someone wrote on this forum that you should allow around £3k a year to run a 4200, not including fuel. As far as I have found that's about right.

Anyway, you only live once, buy a Maserati and you'll won't look back. I certainly haven't, yeah I could have knocked two years off my mortgage but how boring is that?

Martin, well summed up. It's best not to think about the money side of thing as it will stop you from making the purchase.

As for budget, well I buy my cars cash and would never take a load on finance.

Life's for loving, your a long time dead!

H Ghosty....good tohear from you again.........As someone who has had a Maserati and now no longer has one I can tell you I miss it...Once bitten you will not get it out of your system........There are better cars than a Maserati but they are not a Maserati....You either get it or you don't...Thats why we are on here...We get it...

Hard question/quandry.....esp if you're married or have kids......got to balance things out, but provided you're careful in your purchase, sticking £20K into a Maser makes more sense than £25K into a new Beemer....as long as you can avoid a big bill in years 1-2 then depreciaton and running costs are much less than a new Beemer......AND.......you drive a very unique and sought after car.

I too sit here on the sidelines pondering imminent Maserati ownership.

In my case I think it is impossible to justify the decision, it is as the French say a coup de coeur. If I was being rational, living in central London as I do, I would let my garage for £2,000 to £3,000 per annum and use the (free membership) Hertz car club operated on the same block I live on. I've already tried it a few times and it works a breeze: new Fiat 500 at my disposal for a fiver an hour, booked by iPhone app. By doing so I would remove depreciation, insurance, and servicing from my costs. My life would thus be ±£7,000 per annum better off.

But who wants to be rational?

Bottom line for me is that you don't really buy these cars with your head. It's all about buying with your heart. Yes they are expensive but then the good things in life generally are. I have no problem justifying that !

Couldn't agree more Dem. I smile to myself every time I see another 5 series tailgating on the M4....

Had that feeling yesterday when driving to nottingham....
Bmws mercs audis all tailgaiting each other making me smile....

They are just a form of transport to those owners...driving a maserati (& alfa) makes you smile more and be less of a c0ck on the road....

I used to smoke, gave up and now spend the money on a maserati. Costs about the same 2,500 or year plus petrol. Now I smile instead of coughing, still fancy one with a beer but have made my choice.

I tend not to think about it, it'd only upset me.

I think this sentiment sums up my budgeting:
Whilst I can, I do. When I can't, I won't.

(It also works as a motivator for when I get complacent at work!)

Spot on dan

When i had the restaurant i had expensive cars (well for my age mid 20s!)
I had a few newish bmw coupes, i got 2 alfas where the v6 was too much to insure cor most people my age....

At 29 bought my maserati....I did it because i felt it motivated me to go into work and work hard, also makes your staff see that success buys you good things.....
It motivated me......

+1

When I'm not working I'm incredibly frugal.

3-4K a year should make Maser ownership bearable, and most years you will get change out of that. Buy a gransport and you'll scarcely lose anything in depreciation. Think of the people you know who will buy a new beemer and then do the maths on how much they lose every year in depreciation. It makes Maser ownership the prudent option. :)

Its my only vice......well the only one I admit to.....;).......seriously.......if you can live with the running costs.........and have dealt with the depreciation aspect....ie........after year......6/7/8....the curve flattens dramatically...then a very, very affordable....car....nay even...supercar to run/own!
