Local Garage for MOT?

Coming to the end of my 1st Maserati year and due an MOT in the next few weeks. I have a good indie garage near by who specialise in TVR as well as a multitude of run of the mill cars who are also an MOT station. I have known them for years, have a freindly relationship and trust them to do the right thing generally. Would you get your MOT from a local indie or should I really go to a Maserati specialist?

I use a local garage but have known them for many years and trust them. An MOT should not need any specialist knowledge of a particular manufacturer or model to carry out.

+1. That said if the car still has a warranty then I would take it to a specialist or main dealer in case it needs work.

If you do use your local garage, I would build enough time in to get work done at a specialists in case there is a MOT failure (eg: suspension...).

I use a local garage for my MOT as Marios is a 400 mile round trip and i usually only remember a week before it's due! Any worthwhile garage will have sufficient knowledge to MOT a Maserati. As Chris said, make sure they don't check the rear brakes on the rollers.

Testers should get notes on the car when they input the reg no, so as long as they read them, the fact it can't be brake tested on a rolling road should be flagged up. I still reckon it's worthwhile pointing out put though, just in case. Mine's due in just over a month and I'll use a trusted local garage for the MOT.

Is this true? It is often talked about and I have never been sure although I guess it is always best to play it safe. I assume the road test only measures the system as a whole?

Absolutely. I believe the LSD would be damaged if they brake tested the rear wheels on the rollers. Fronts are fine to be tested on rollers, followed by road test for rears and a handbrake check.

As I said I always prefer to take the safe route it is just that you hear so many stories, arguments etc it is difficult to work out what is really true.

I can understand how "if" they test the wheels independently it could be a problem.

Thanks for all the responses and decision made. On the Diff brake test question my local garage tested my previous 911 turbo and straight away told me that they would take no chances with the diff and used the g force test on their forecourt. I had never seen this before so thought it was a pretty cool system with a sensor placed in the pasenger footwell during a rolling brake test. They involve me in the MOT all the way so no need to "keep an eye on them" as such.

Very helpful advice and thanks again to all of you.

I have an interesting warranty question of you next!

Local garage for me every time. I take 5 cars a year into them so I see the every couple of months.

You build up a relationship with them and they are always fair and never use my MOT as a work finding exercise if you know what I mean!

Same here. I take my cars down to my local - they are always very very busy. Take my supercar there as well. So if they can deal with that they will have zero problems dealing with a Maserati. They are also super cheap! £29. If there is a problem they tell me. I take it somewhere to get fixed and they do the MOT again for me for free.

As a matter of interest what garage do you use for your not maf. Would perfer to go to a place where they already carry out on a maserati.

Steve - I use Advanced Autos in Watford (WD23 2DR). Owned by a guy with a 360 spyder, run by a guy called Victor. Highly recommended for everyday repairs.

I have tied my MOT expiry in my with annual service so it goes to Shiltech, plus I have an issue with emissions s my local MOT centre would probably not be able to help me there
