The resurrection of the Exxy is proceeding as planned and so I'm now turning my thoughts towards tracking it in some mildly competitive format. Initially I'm thinking sprints and hill climbs.

With this in mind I have the MSA welcome pack and will soon take the ARDS test up at Donington to get my national class B licence.

After trudging through the Blue Book I'm little wiser, so thought I would find a local MSA approved scrutineer to take a look over the car and give his thoughts and pointers towards classification etc and I'm now also in contact with the Hillclimb and Sprint Association. Thought I'd join Shelsley Walsh as well, as it's not too far away.

Clothing, protection, etc will follow as required and I'm already planning to attend some events over the summer to get a feel for what's involved.

So, any thoughts or pointers from those that might have trodden a similar path? I'm not looking to throw every weekend into it, so championships are out, and that's not really why I want to do it, but maybe half a dozen outings through the summer and the fun of improving my driving skills are the objectives.

Wad'ya think??......

Go for it.

I did a number of sprints and hill climbs a fair while back (read long while back), mainly for setting up the car for tarmac rallies and it was relatively inexpensive fun, especially when compared to stage rallies or proper circuit racing. I wouldn't have thought things would have changed that much in the last 25 years, but the gist was a couple of practice runs in the morning followed by a couple of timed runs in the afternoon. Fairly kind on the car, tyres and driver. Good venues back then were Sutton Valence (near Sevenoaks), West Malling and North Weald airfields.

Here's my old mini

Hi Trev, thanks for that. I think the format is still pretty much the same. I have no idea how my car would be classified to be honest. I think probably both classic and modified, so goodness knows what I'd be up against. Still, sounds like fun.

West Malling....just a sea of houses now. All thats left of the airfield are the control towere now a cafe and some of the admin blocks...I used to stretch the legs of my traffic car on the runway purely to calibrate the speedo and vas-car system...honest.

Nice one Miles go for it mate. The driving standards they teach nowadays are a huge step up from when I was racing a few year ago...It dosen't mean you'll be any faster though :approve:
