Maserati 4200 oil pump failure

Hello,

I am new here and to Maserati!! I have owned many other great Italian cars though, mostly Alfa's and Lancia's.

Does anybody have parts from a 4200 02 reg oil pump? I am rebuilding a very low mileage engine which has suffered an oil pump failure. The front pump's casing has failed and siezed the rotor causing the shaft to shear off!! I have been told that this is quite common!! The other two rotors are as new.

I do not want to fit a new pump and have the failure again. I would rather use a rotor set with casing which I can check and assemble to make a perfect pump.

Does anybody have a good number 1 rotor with casing and a shaft?

Any help would be much appreciated. I am rebuilding this engine as I may be puchasing a high mileage example and I want to be ready when it goes BANG!!!

Many thanks,

Harry.

Hi Harry and welcome to the forum. I've been on here a while and I can honestly say I have not heard that oil pump failure is a known fault. Emtee had oil issues, but i'm not sure it was a pump failure. The 4200 engine is generally very strong and reliable, bordering on bulletproof. Dave Askew might be a good starting point, but i'm sure someone will be along shortly with more options.

Hi Harry, Welcome to the forum. Maserati have registered a small number of pump failures, though it is only a handful. The shaft is splined between the water pump and the oil pump, and it's the spline that is the weak point. Re-building is an option, as the water / oil pump is an expensive item, but if you had a spline failure, I'd check the integrity of the scavenge rotors, as if these are scored and have lost their seals, or if the oil-ways are damaged, you'll be rebuilding a pump with the potential to have pressure issues. As Benny mentions, David Askew is worth a call, but you could also try the guys at Shiltech. They sponsor this part of the forum and have some spares. Don't know whether they'll have the bits you need, but the pump is the same on the 360, and it's a failure risk on the Ferrari for the same reason. Best of luck in sourcing the bits you need.

Welcome to the forum Harry......good to hear a 4200 engine/car is being put back on the road, as Miles says there is a weakeness in the dual water/oil pump set up and as ever if it fails castastrope awaits. If David Askew doesn't have one ask Breakeronly, a member on the forum

Hi Benny and Emtee, thanks for your reply. I have rebuilt many engines in my time but I have never seen a failure like this. The surface of the casing has detached itself and siezed the rotor causing the shaft to shear off?
The rest of the pump is as new???
This is the reason why I would rather rebuild the pump myself than buying a new one. It seems clear that Maserati know about the problem and have reverted back to separate pumps on their new engines (from 2010 I think??)

Many thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

Harry.
