As for licensing, yes you should have a license for some radios but for a group rapidly heading south detection is very difficult and the interference caused will be minimal as we transit through. The worst we can do is order a taxi.

I like the CB style :) Having worked with southern state Mercuns, how many syllables do you think we can get into 'convoy'?

The licence isn't about being detected, it's to hand to a genderme who has watched you use it. They loathe gumball style rallies now in France.

The worlds gone mad....pay licence for a handheld radio in France...I very much don't think so!

I've been watching this thread with interest and waited until I saw a pov that tallied with mine. And here it is, thanks Matt! Who gives a sh!t about a licence? If that is the worst thing the ba5tards get us for then it's been a good run. Let's not overthink this guys, it's a tool to help us from being financially raped by the cheese eating, surrender monkey forces of darkness. The more radios the merrier and I wouldn't dream of going on a mob-handed blast without one. So please, pretty please with sugar on top, let's all buy some radios. You won't regret it.

The Mitex ones (available from Maplin) are 5W UHF ones, with have much better range and also work when inside a car!:-

Twin pack (£150 for 2): http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/mitex-general-5w-uhf-radios-2-pack-a68jx
Single (£80): http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/mitex-security-5w-uhf-2-way-radio-a69jx

These are the ones that SCD members use, so if you didn't want to keep it after the trip, then I'm sure members from SCD will buy them off you, as members often ask about them after seeing how useful they are on drives, convoys, etc.

perhaps we could have a twitter thing, or a blog we can all join from our phones? my car has an internet enabled entertainment thing with a 3G web link, i can access waze, and text messaging and all that? I can also access Skype on my phone , and probably twitter, although i am not a twitter kind of guy i think it works :)

Davy, I don't think you've quite grasped how tight many of our members are :) (oooerrr!)

Paying for data while roaming? I'd hazard a guess that won't happen for most. Three quid a day is very nearly a cup of coffee in the Alps ;)

I'm just a little concerned about radios, if Benny get's one and starts ranting about frogs legs over the air, we could have half the rossers in France on our tail..!!

Whatsapp, twatter and texting are ok whilst sitting in a coffee bar but, it seems to me, they might be a bit inflexible whilst doing 70-100+ along a mountain pass with a 1000 ft drop especially if, like me, you need reading glasses to to see it. I'm sure this social media thing has it's uses but I don't think this is one of them. What we need is a real-time means of communication that is audible, easily usable with one hand and, once bought, free to use. A Mitex radio does the job perfectly.

How many are alone in the car? From dinner reservations, the splitters are all 2 up

C

I think that was the understanding based behind the suggestion of using phones. That there would be two to a car.

Mobile phone only allow communication between two people.
Radios allow more and chatter.
Whatsapp allows group messaging.

Aye, that's true. Although whatsapp can be driven by the co driver.

How did Sarah enjoy her lap?

C
Chris,
She flipping loved it. She spent most of the rest of the day talking about getting into Motorsport! She got to just over 90mph which I was surprised at.
Hope you equally enjoyed it!?
Cheers
