When they realise it was raining and the road was saturated, a defective tyre will be, without doubt, regarded as a major contributory factor to the accident. IMO, it will be a VERY benevolent Insurance company that will pay out for that, especially as it's a total loss.

Mark, it's always tw@ts on Euro boxes I find. Hurtling along at 80mph in awful conditions.

About 3 years ago I was on the M62 Saturday 6am in the summer, it was throwing it down, large amounts of standing water, I was in a van doing about 45 -50, I wasn't comfortable going any faster because the wipers wouldn't clear the rain

This guy in an M5 came past in the outside lane doing 80' no idea how he could see where he was going

As we got to Huddersfield about 10 minutes later I could see cars parked on the hard shoulder and bits of BMW all over the motorway

Looked to me like he'd crested a hill and hit a load of standing water and lost it.

There were a few people there so I didn't stop but I did see him surveying the wreckage with a how did that happen look on his face

shucks this is awful but at least he is ok... if I was him I'd argue that it was the final skid that wore the tyre out below the legal limit and make the insurance company prove otherwise....It's something that's always bugged me!

In the 1980s I was in court when a taxi driver tried that defence

He claimed a dog had run in front of him which necessitated a lengthy skid which must have wore the tread off.

The magistrate just looked at him and said, what, all the way round, guilty

Raining? Really?
You cannot even get a localized tyre wear due to a hard braking in the wet because there is no grip.
That's the reason he crashed for in the first place.

All these stories are telling me that I'll change over my rears following Bruntingthorpe, my front tyres still have 3-4mm but I won't go much beyond October before they get changed.

ABS would prevent a flat spot if the car could generate that much grip while it was raining, and if ABS, isn't working, guess what, the police can fine you for driving a defective vehicle and insurance might still take a dim view.

OK chaps, it appears not to be a realistic argument, but I still feel some wear would have happened during the crash!
When I bought my GT I knew the tyres would need changing soon, but thought they'd be good for another 1000 miles or so. One very wet trip on the motorway and I went online that night to get some ordered as I felt it twitch when it shouldn't have. I was fortunate I guess!

My experience in this car more than any other is of substantially reduced grip in the wet when the tread is getting close to minimum.

The tyres have spent quite a bit of time going sideways looking at the photo's so ABS wouldn't kick in and you'd get a very flat spot, even in the rain - I'd keep on arguing about legality of the tread depth if it was my insurance premium at stake

that's good to know. do you guys find it is more twitchier when in sports mode than in normal in the wet?
