I thought WhatsApp was encrypted?
Mate just bought a GTS Cayman and I asked via WhatsApp whether it had red seat belts to match the red paintwork.
Now I'm getting adverts for car seat belts on Facebook.....

I’m interested by this as I can’t find a proper answer. I think there are 3 answers:

  1. It’s just a coincidence
  2. Yes they’re encrypted and only the sender and recipient can read the message but data is shared amongst Meta platforms.
  3. Implanted bugs from the Covid vaccine and chips made in China are recording everything you type. They then transmit it to the Peoples Army who share it with Crazy Joe Biden so he can fiddle the election. He then uses it to control your lives and sells it to Facebook to recoup his costs. FB have unfortunately leaked it to aliens after a USB was left on a Greyhound bus and they now know where you live so they can come and probe your bottom.

Or...don't trust Google or Facebook.

Especially since #3 is true, and we will miss @Oneball as there's no way that they can let him walk free now...

I'm sure it's #2 although #3 isn't out of the question!!

This is only my understanding: 2 only means they use the data from WhatsApp. Meta can’t read the message, but if for example you had a seatbelt supplier in your WhatsApp phone book they could target ads based on that in FB.

That's not how encryption works and very much not what #2 implies. Sorry to sound grumpy. The answer is #1

I don’t quite understand. If the message is encrypted then only sender and recipient can read the message?

Exactly. Ergo it cannot be shared across other platforms since they are not the sender or the recipient. Nor will the key to decrypt the message be shared to other platforms. Without the key the hash has no meaning.

This exactly how we prevent our client data from being accessible despite being stored in the same 'place'

The message can’t be shared but data such as when you use WhatsApp, companies in your contacts, etc can?

Well the best way is to test it - send a message about red seat belts to someone and check if you get ads. Or send a message about something else and test the hypothesis..if it’s systems based it should do it every time.

I believe it not to be 1, 2 or 3. I suspect although it is encrypted that Meta will be able to read messages. We know this is likely of Amazon as encrypted data I understand can be accessed and used by Amazon and US security services.

I find it difficult to believe that this data is locked/encrypted and not able to be accessed by anyone other than the two end points.

Amazon I understand records/listens to every word of Alexa conversations but many seem either not to know or not bothered.

For me, no matter what the argument, for too much a coincidence.
Nothing was spoken for alexa to pick up, which we have experienced many times, and for a full targeted advertisement within a few minutes for seat belt replacement with different colours....not buying it.

I imagine when can be shared, although I'd not stake my reputation on it without reading the Ts+Cs. As for who's in your contacts. Again, I think it could be but if it is I have no idea.

It won’t be Meta, it’ll be google ads. For me it’s more likely to come from something like a web search or a Alexa.

Not that it especially bothers me. But I do have the appropriate cookie setting for my google account.

It's really not hard to do.

You won’t. They can’t read your message.

Correct

Annnnnd this is why I wanted to ignore the thread :) Humans want to see patterns and cause and effect. Even if there isn't any. Still no matter :)
