I read an article about a guy who only buys cars with high mileage. he reckons he gets a good car for less money, and that in a modern car , modern engine, they are good for many more miles than previous generations of cars.

got me thinking , as I did'nt disagree with his logic.
I bought a new ford XR2 in 87. swapped it in 96 with 198k trouble free miles on It. I swapped it for another ford, 2.0 scorpio estate. I did 325k miles in this untill the gearbox seal went in 2002.

So, do we put too much importance on mileage ?

Plus I would have thought come sale time it's much harder to sell a car with high mileage.

these were cars that got me to work & back. thats all they were , work horses. I had no real love of them. but , if it aint broke dont fix them.
when the time to move on, well if you got your monies worth out of them then they dont owe you anything. so what ever return you get is a bonus.

The older these cars get the less of problem high mileage will be , for a total novice mileage might be an issue come purchase time , but anyone that has done some sensible homework (like on here ) will have understood that miles aren't the primary comcern , more that its been well looked after and serviced properly and reguarly , these engines are bullet proof ( except in 10 inches of standing water ) and every year further along will confirm this

Depends on the car

With supercars yes mileage is important if anything its vital!!
How many 100k plus ferraris are there? If so the will be cheap and hanging around a long time, equally with lambos astons etc.....
Maser models like 3200 4200 seem to have levelled out and a 100k one is around 8k making it a good buy in my book

When i look at work cars or family cars high miles make sense, i been looking at 318d m sport for the mrs and i can get an 09 plate for 7k with 100k but a 60k car is 10k!! These diesel engines do over 160k without any probs!!

Miles on cars never stopped me buying a car...History and condition is far more importand....My M3 has 100k on the clock and goes like a rocket.......Its how its been looked after to be honest.....But there is a still a those who would worry about high miles and it does hit resale.....But as long as its a bit of a bargain you can not go far wrong....

Rob the sort of cars you are talking about it wouldn't bother me one bit.

All my recent high mileage cars have been my company cars, from new to around 120k, mostly diesel BMWs.
They have all be okay, but after 100k things like suspension bushes/dampers/calipers start failing which is more of an inconvenience.

Regarding the Maserati I wanted a car to defy its age so low mileage was important. I didn't want pockmarked windscreen/lights, worn seats etc being a weekend toy.
However if a daily driver, a higher mileage Maserati would not have put me off!

Yup...in the S Times last week....if maintained....most cars happy to go to 150 plus K miles....but as noted all the other bits give bother and need replaced

A Citroen DS I once had, had done 250K miles by one owner in Rhodesia as it was then, from 1969 to 1993.....I ran it as a daily for another couple of years and sold it......

I think there is something to be proud of in have a motor that you have stacked loads of miles on.

When it comes to something like Maserati, then sure, mileage counts unless you are going to keep it till your pushing up Daisy's....then why worry, just enjoy.

I had a 1993 BMW525 that had over 160K miles and was still going strong when I passed it on.
I have a 1991 Mercedes 500SL with 104K miles and runs beautifully.

But they're both German and renowned for sturdy engines...

Of course neither have ever seen a track day!!

Oh good.

45,000 miles on the maser clock, goes better now than when new. Original pads still only 60% worn, original clutch still only 35% worn, never missed a beat yet with that mileage most potential buyers would either look elsewhere or offer an insulting bid.

The naggers 2004 BMW 320D touring has 193k on it and is still going strong. I had a Montego TDI estate which we scrapped with 256k on it and it the only engine work it ever had was oil and filter changes. The oily bits were fine but the bodywork was f*cked. I have no worries at all with high milers, especially diesels, provided they have been properly serviced and looked after.
