So the car has had the front discs fitted no problems - front pads being grinded to fit when I called! Seems the garage manager would have been happier only if I had sent parts from Maserati directly! I told him and the mechanic they may need to grind it down a bit - but as he stated on then phone "these weren't made for this car" I had to bite my tounge from saying "I know, I did tell you this. Pleas just politely fit them and charge me labour...!"

So it gets tested again tomorrow morning, hopefully all ok!

Will keep you all posted

So it takes another 20 mins per set...big deal...................have both 550 discs and Greengrippers, way better than OEMS!

It's fitted with 550 discs and Matts Ferrodo pads so will fit perfectly!

Some places just don't understand!!!

Mark those are the correct pads for the car made by the same company as the oem pads. Filing the pads is perfectly normal so I would not worry about it.

It's just the garage not knowing the cars.

Glad they were all ok.

Hi Matt

Agreed - it's just the garage manager not liking the fact the pads state they are for a different car. The mechanic was great about it!

They finish the job this am and I hopefully pick it up lunch time, fingers crossed!!

What's the best way in your opinion to bed brakes in???

Will keep you posted mate

It's at an Indie based in Ryton (near Newcastle) who are very good.

Hi Mark

Just bought a 4200 and noticed that you are based up in Newcastle. I think I have seen your car recently over in Jesmond which is where I am based. It would be good to meet a fellow Maserati owner in the North East at some time (excluding Mr Yellow Granturismo who tries to kill everyone in Jesmond each weekend!).

I thought there would be some owners at Dave's event last weekend but there was a poor showing from the Maserati tifosi!

Dunno about the bedding in but just take it easy for the first 50 miles. If you have had new discs and pads, then all surfaces are flat so you should not have an issue. When you are putting new pads up agains old discs, its takes time for the pads to wear into the surface curvature of the disc.

APOLOGIES - THIS WAS WHERE I SHOULD HAVE POSTED MY UPDATE... ON BOTH THREADS NOW (sorry):

Evening all - I don’t think I posted my original comments re the brakes on this exact thread - but seeing as it’s the most recent I thought it best!

So - following all the superb advice from all of you gents, when my 4200 GT failed its MOT due to brake discs and pads - I took the plunge and purchased the 550 discs and some pads off Matt (thanks again!).

I asked my Indie to fit and he obliged - although I have to say that when I told him the cost saving he was dubious it would work - but it did!

Apparently everything fitted great although the pads needed a bit of grinding down (which is apparently very normal).

I thought a quick update to help fellow 4200 owners may help:

Upon braking the car feels very sure footed, very stable and very importantly - it stops! I would say it took a few hundred miles to bed in but after that it’s been great.

To be honest there are no real downsides, but if I have to be picky they are as follows;

The pads appear to give off a little more brake dust than before but nothing major.

The hubs of the discs are corroding - this will be easily rectified with hammerite I suppose. When they are all sparkling they look ace - but with some water and general road muck they are starting to look untidy and need sorting out.

I don’t think they have ground the pads enough. When I start the car after its been sitting over night and raining, there is a noticeable squeal. This goes once the discs are cleaned by braking.

The upsides:

This is simple, very simple - the cost! I simply cannot believe how much I've saved. My wife was going to kill me when I told her the original quote for original Maserati - I'm happy to say that with the savings I'm still married!!!

All joking aside the discs are great. I had bad corrosion before and so when I braked it sounds like a fighter plane coming in to land - now it’s silent. They look good (or they will do with the painted hubs) and they really do feel sure footed.

All in all I cannot thank the forum enough. Not only have you saved me serious money but I also have a happier wife and my pride and joy stops as the Maserati factory intended!!

Thanks again to all that helped me. If I in turn can be of any assistance to anyone else, please feel free to ask away.

Take the pads out, make sure they drop in and put a blob of copper grease on the back of the pad.

Loving your avatar by the way!

Thanks Matt - I'll get them to do just that when I'm having the back tyres changed on Friday!

I'm pleased you like the Avatar - just need to paintshop the valeting bit off (I allowed them to take pictures for their marketing!!)
