Yesterday I did a 140 mile round trip and as I was just reversing to park my car the whole front of the car got covered in smoke and smell of oil was everywhere. In close inspection it looked as though the pipe has snapped dropping all the oil on the exhaust causing the smoke. 3 hours later and car was taken to a garage and this morning I was informed that the pipe wasn't properly inserted into its bracket and as a result it was touching the exhaust which melted it and blah blah....

So my car is in the garage trying to find the right part which having looked at Eurospare's website looks approximately £17 but I need to know the right part number to order etc. which means I would be without my car for a few days which I am not at all hapy about as you can probably guess. When RAC turned up I was tempted to take the car home and try to fix it myself but he advised me that it might be a bit complicated to get to as it goes all around the engine.

Last thing I ever expected but apparently is common! anyone else had this? :hammer:

Oh dear, at least it is a cheap fix, well should be, and yes, I have heard of it a few times with the oil pipes and event the hydraulic pipes.

SD....lucky it didn't happen you in the outside lane at 90+......can you put up a pic or two so we can see what the problem was?

Anyways, cheap fix and you weren't in any danger!

Well it went from a cheap fix to a reasonably expensive fix! Pipe is about £150ish from Eurospares plus £130 Labour so now we talking £300, life is never that easy I guess. As for where it happened I am extremly grateful otherwise apart from the danger I had to sit in my car for 3 hours.
Dilemma I have now is that they need to order this pipe from Italy which takes 7 to 10 days(in Italian term that could mean a few weeks) or maybe I should look for a secondhand one somewhere! Any ideas? Not a happy boy here :-(

Try a main dealer - if its in stock in Italy they should have it for you in 5 days or less and you may be surprised at their prices.
Oh, and the dealer will be able to tell you if Italy have it in stock

Dont go 2nd hand for obvious reasons unless an expert says ok to do so.....they send a weekly container to the UK dealers, if they have it in stock in Italy, then its guaranteed, no probs, or they can send express for $40 odd quid, get it flown in to your nearest dealer

Andy

Sorry to hear about your woes.
I would definitely not go for second hand on something like this.

Anyway, hope you get it sorted out soon.

Cheers

Hi,
Not sure what pipe you are refering to, but if its a reinforced rubber type with proper unions at each end. There are plenty of engineering suppliers who could make up a new pipe and if nessesary reuse the original unions if these are non standard. Check yellow pages etc for hydraulic engineering supplies.

This is the part that I need, the reason for considering the secondhand was the availability. Waiting for it to come from Italy could mean being without my car for 2 weeks.

Maserati 4200 Coupe (2003) - PIPE FROM PUMP TO DRIVING BOX
Part No. 193190
- Valid for GD

This is from eurospares for £100 plus VAT and Shipping.

I see it's a pipe for the power steering, part metal pipe part rubber hose. I'm sure if you took the complete pipe to a hydraulic hose supplier they could replace the rubber hose part for £50 ish probably while you wait ?

Thanks Jag,
Quick update is that I spoke to HR Owen of all places and they can order one from Italy for next day delivery for the exact same prce as Eurospares. If I don't make progress I think that is what I will do, just have one made. The problem is that I don't know where it is exacty failed to decide the best solution. Visit to the garage is on the cards I think.

Hello All,
I have got my baby back now and it is such a great feeling, £301.00 later and nearly two weeks without her which seemed like eternity.

Part was ordered from HR Owen which had to come from Italy next day which in Italian means at least a week but hey ho it is what it is as they say.

Hi Loz,
Apparently the pipe wasn't put back into its bracket properly and has been rubbing against the exhaust which in time melted the pipe through.
The garage is called Davey in Blakelands and they are an Alfa specialist but David who owns the garage knows maseratis really well as his brother owns five of them old and new. I was very pleased with the job they did and I highly recommend them but not sure how in depth they klnow the car and how much they can do. I do know that some of the people from the American forum are using these guys to buy things like the F1 pump which are much cheaper in the UK.

Thanks for the advise loz which as always in appreciated, I owe you a few more beers! ;- )

Catch up soon

Andy
