New addiction: Track Days

Thanks to Andy K and the Llandow days this year I am off to France this weekend with 'Lotus on Track' for a double header; Clastres Saturday and Ecuyers Sunday.
After 5 years of Lotus ownership unbelievably Llandow earlier this year was my first track day. That experience highlighted a few things; my Toyo T1R tyres were rubbish, my suspension was too soft, and my Geo was out giving me understeer at low speed and oversteer at high speed, my brake fluid was rubbish, etc.

So in preparation for my 2nd outing at Llandow a few weeks ago I went a bit mad on the upgrades... And after spending £5k on upgrades an £8k car it's now a pretty sorted track car... And if I'm honest, a fairly uncomfortable road car! However, all the mods have been on brakes, tyres, suspension and geo (I know, you don't get much for £5k!!) and so the engine is still only producing 120bhp-ish.

So, I'm off to France to do battle with a couple of 280bhp SC Exiges, a 300bhp turbo charged Europa and many more experienced track dayers. It should be quite fun!

The first track looks quite fast and open - I reckon I'll get left behind by the more powerful stuff. However, the second one looks quite tight and twisty and so hopefully my lighter car will hold its own.

A couple more outings and it'll be time to apply for an ARD's license and watch the bank account empty itself....

Enjoy Dan, i am sure you will have a great time, regarding the power on your Elise, why not drop a new unit in like a 2.0 Duratec or V Tec?

I did Ecuyers last year with LOT, nice day out. Not much food (sandwich) so take something if you've an appetite!

Power doesn't matter a jot there, the straight is only a few seconds - your car with fresh suspension, and decent Geo will be plenty quick, the big power types will get frustrated!

We were supposed to do Abbeville on the Saturday but it was iced over so went to Paris for the day! Ecuyers had some ice, exciting drive in an old 911...

Them were the days...

I can think of 10,000 pound-shaped reasons why you might not...

It's a lot to chuck at an £8k car.

On the subject of trackdays - I'm off to Goodwood in the morning now, weather looking good, new brakes feeling good :)

Subject to the car passing the noise regs that is, they're letting me get tested then deciding whether or not to drive/pay. Ideal.

I was at Goodwood last weekend for the vintage sports car meet, was an excellent day, some very noisy things flying around including a 16 cylinder Maserati recreation. I don't think it had larinis on it though. Its a lovely circuit, I've been round a few times, just remember not to put your foot down too early when going through the chicane!
