New Car, No Service Record / Log Book

Good to hear people's opinions on this. I think my usual advice to myself would be to walk away!

But in this case I've got a good chance to get the car sorted at a really good price and deal with the service book later. The dealer has sent me scans of all the receipts and a screenshot of the ecu and it shows its due a service, so what we've agreed is that I'll take the car if he gives it a full service and also order a book to the garage thatll have the last stamp. I'll then send it to maserati for the other stamps. I called maserati and they said this is fine. From my point of view the service is most important and expensive and I don't fancy waiting ages for a stamped book, I'd rather take this deal now and go for a spin down to the maserati garage on a few weekends :)

So it's due the 4th service. I managed to find a 2008 (prefacelift) zf user manual that lists all the usual service items and fluid replacements, filters and aux belt replacement. It doesn't mention anything about transmission fluid replacement. What else needs changing on a duoselect on the 4th service? It's been over 2yrs although only 6k miles since the last one.

I forgot to mention, the main dealers also store all the service history so I was able to verify the ecu screenshot and receipts. All seems legit! I just need to make sure for my own peice of mind that all the correct items are serviced and parts replaced where needed.

Thats good to hear...it may be hard to get the old invoices from the dealers even if you request redacted ones...I had to try four different dealers to get the history of my first 4200 eight years back.
I also saw some huge items like...New Gearbox under warranty, that will be £9k please!

Good news that the SH checks out. You don't mention where the dealer intends to get it serviced. If I were buying the car I'd insist on it being serviced at a specialist or main dealer. The procedures are more complex than most cars, the correct oils and fluids are essential and they'll need the very expensive diagnostic kit to do the job properly. The scope for your dealer skimping is massive, and you need to make sure it's done by an outfit you can trust.

Yep, totally agree. It's at Kent Ferrari Centre now, will be serviced in the week. They seem like a good outfit but I haven't spoken to them. Is there anything inparticular I need to keep an eye out for on the 4th service? Should it be having gearbox oil change? Anyone use Kent Ferrari Centre in the past? If there is anything particularly difficult or expensive on this service, I want to give the seller the heads-up so he knows I'll be looking out for it and everyone's on the same page. He seems like a decent bloke, but like you say, there's a good chance something might be missed out.

Here's what mine had at its last service at Meridien @ 29400 miles: 8-year service including 2 year items:
Oil (Shell Helix Ultra), Oil filter, gearbox oil (Shell S5 7590), hydraulic fluid (Spirax S2 ATF), brake fluid change (DoT4), Air filter, Aux drive belt, Pollen filter, AC filter, AC regas, coolant (Glyco 48). After a few sundries and labour the bill came to £1550.

Here are the 2 pages covering the service schedule for a QPV Duo Select.

Did you not do the lambda sensors and fuel tank carbon filter? If not then the list reads more like a 2 or 6 year service rather than a 4 or 8?

Interesting that the DS only has one aux belt which is a useful saving as the auto has two.

It was done in Dec 2014 and I've had the car 6 weeks. If it needed doing at 29k miles I'm sure Meridien would have done it - the previous owner wasn't short of money. It says 8 year service on the invoice. I think I've read a thread elsewhere about whether to replace lambda sensors at the specified mileage. Every 4 years for a car that's sat in a garage doing nothing seems somewhat excessive. Anyway, let's not divert Andy's thread by talking about my car's history. Much as I like talking about my car :)

Fantastic, this is really helpful. Thanks. It's basically as I expected, change all fluids, some filters and the aux belt. I know the oil and filters have been done and I discussed changing at least the aux belt and fluids and anything else mentioned in the manual. I'll pass it on so I can avoid turning up to find something has been missed.

My only risk is trusting both the garage and dealer that when the receipt says something has been changed, it actually has. Eg. There is no way I'll be able to see if the gearbox oil has been done. Same with any service I suppose.

Thanks again. :)

Its nice to trust...but better to check. Belt should look new as should the oil so thats two you can do.

Check for the filters to see if they look like the casing has been disturbed ie finger marks and bright marks on screws and bolts.

This is 100% why I have used the same mechanic for the last 10 years , the thought of handing over £1500+ then having to worry about whether they've actually done the work makes me stick with him.

Yesterday he fixed the number plate lights, refitted the front arch liners , fitted the front sill cover back on where 2 clips had broken , took all the wheels off so I could wire brush the nuts

Checked all the underside of the car for leaks, bearings brakes etc then serviced it including fitting a new belt tensioner and belt , oil, filters inc pollen filter

I supplied all the parts which came to about £200 , he charged me £150 so £350 and I know it's all been done

As long as a car is running correctly and the mileage hasn't been tampered with a service history is a bonus to me not a necessity , if 2 identical cars were for sale one with a full history and one with part or no history but it was 3k cheaper I'd go with the 3k saving every time because there's nothing to say the one with full history won't want 3k spending on it

You can tell if a car has been looked after, I was going to get mine coated in dinitrol but having had a walk around under it I'd be wasting my money, it's really clean under there

Surely the diagnostic machine is needed to diagnose a problem , not needed for a service if it's running OK
