The big decision to make is MC shift or auto. Have a search on the forum and see what will suit your requirements

I may as well say it:
Focus on history and maintenance rather than miles, +50k car that has had the main maintenance jobs just completed will be a better buy than a 30k car that need bushes can covers blah blah won’t be

Check subframe and is not using respected specialist a PPi is a good use investment.

Good luck with your search - they are Fab cars

Great advise, this has been my dilemma, I am considering a 2010 with 35K on the clock but its last service is overdue and the current owner I get the impression is not very knowledgeable, or a 2011 with 49K on the clock which seems pretty solid from a knowledgeable dealer.

Both are pretty similar price wise too! the 35K miles one is a private seller also so no warranty

Just get the car checked (PPI), then you’ll know what’s needed going forward. On that basis I’d go for lower miles, but that’s not to say the one with 49k isn’t a great car.

I am thinking about 4200 or Granturismo and I noted the adverse comment about 4.2 versus 4.7. As a newbie can someone explain is there a problem with the 4.2 ?

Test drive both and see which you prefer, also with later 4.7’s you won’t have the variator issue that plagues the 4.2

Thanks for your comment. Is the 4.2 engine in the Coupe the same as the one in the early Granturismo ? if so do they also have a variator issue (and what is a variation issue ?)

I am more inclined to the 4200 Coupe and I don't think I can afford a 4.7 Granturismo...how much are they ?

Nothing wrong with the Granturismo 4.2 unit. Plenty fast enough. Is auto only (fine with me) and unlike the 4.7 you don't get valved back boxes. Looks great, drives great, sounds great.

Some auto 4.2 engines in the Granturismo and QPV (up to about 2010 but engine number related rather than chassis number related) have had issues but like many of these things, the internet can make them appear more common than is the case. 4200 was not available as an auto and has no such issues - you get the choice of manual or SMG BMW M style gearboxes.

'Plague' is scary especially as I don't know what it is

Yeah, it's an issue if it happens, but doesn't always happen.

Top end engine noise.

Per Phil's video. The variable valve timing mechanism can be prone to wear. The noise is embarrassing and eventually it can lead to misfires and engine lights. The fix is a bit eek (from memory £4k ish) so worth being aware, having evidence that it's been done, or a war chest.

It seems to happen earlier in the lifespan so if you're looking at cars with maybe 80k, it's less likely that it's going to happen.

Subframes seem to be far more of a thing to be aware of, but can be checked :)
