Paint work recommendation

Bubbles (pin head size) and flaking paint have started to appear on a corner of my front bumper, in a area that the previous owner had resprayed approx 20 months ago. I believe this is due to either poor paint priming or a reaction (corrosion) between the plastic panel and the paint, but the paintwork needs to be sorted and take back to the bare panel, treated and resprayed again.

Does anyone have any other guidance/experience on treating this?

And most importantly can anyone recommend a bodyshop/paint resprayer in/ around London, who can do this relatively small job well and economically.

Thank you.
James

James, firstly, ensure they use the correct type of paint, sticker located under the bonnet back near one of the support struts!!!

Ahhhh....Micro Blistering, reaction between two types of paint I think. Common complaint where SMART repairs have taken place

Looks like a smart repair to be honest. Getting the correct paint is essential and so is getting it from the correct manufacturer. Maserati use PPG, insist that the paint is matched only from this system and base.

Brilliant, thank you all.

Matt may I ask - "What is PPG" - I understand it is a paint mixing system, but cannot workout (from internet searches) if this is also a different type of paint? (I will ask for it!)

This forum a gold mine of really useful information! Thank you.

Not sure entirely, but the same problem may arise as before if you don't use the recommended type.

I had similar problems with my previous Maser, the bodyshop would prep and spray and after a while, the blisters would come back. This happened 2 or 3 times, after which we decided to prep the panel right back, take off all remnants of any paint and then prep and spray. this seemed to cure the problem.

Thanks

..the only thing to do...nothing worse then a dubious paint job on a high end car...ruins confidence in it when you go to sell it on.

Hi James,

PPG is a large/global painting/chemical business - Pittsburg Paint Group = PPG

Like many large coatings business they do car refinish paint.

Correct Paul, in essence James, its the manufacturer of the paint. They supply Maserati and others the paint. Other companies will then try and match the recipe, with varying results.

Alot of bodyshops now mix their own paint, but I have always had colour issues with this system. Buying the correct paint from the correct manufacture is more costly and time consuming, but its reflected in the result.

Blue is a very bad colour to match in metallic and when its a few years old, as the red pigment fades. The Nutello has a large proportion of red in it.

When ordering and having any paint mixed it is always best to source a local/regional supplier who has had ongoing training in the use of the paint from the manufacturuer and also runs a clean shop outlet.

Many problems come from the tinting/mixing machines not being well serviced and kept.

I am not a massive expert on this but the company that I work for did make Autocolour years back, which was for the refinish market.

And not to show off tooooo much we now make the paint for Mclaren F1 cars..................oooooooooooooo get him I hear you say!!

Update - Matching the colour Nettuno Blu, was a nightmare (as Conaero predicted!) but the paint shop (Chips Away) did a great job trying to get the best result including looking at alternative paints, although PPG was my preference the colour was different, but finally after 6 different paint test cards we stuck with PPG, as it was the closest blend, even though my paint colour has aged over the years.

The downside of respraying the front bumper is that the stone chips on the bonnent suddenly become quite visible, so we did the bonnet and top of the wings as wel and the result is excellent and I am very pleased. (Slightly poorer than planned, but worth it).

I have now booked my car in for it annual service, using www.supercarhub.com to search for the best servicing options and cost, it works extremely well and is very competitive. I highly recommend trying it - I had 10 quotes from a range of main dealers and Indies, many garages recommneded on this forum. (Great concept Andrea!)

Thank you for the tips and help.

Respray of front bumper complete, although matching the colour (Nettuno Blu) was a complete nightmare, (thanks Conaero!) I wanted to use PPG paint although the colour was difficult to blend on just the bumper, as it showed up the stonechips and "aged" colour on the bonnet. So the spray-shop tried multiple different paint manufactures and test cards, but PPG was definately the best choice, in the end we extended the respray up the bonnet and covered the stone chips and blending the colour across the bonnet and wings. This worked very well (although double the cost!).
