1984 RAC Rally Knowsley

My self, my wife and our four year old daughter once drove in the Safari rally ! Which I still think is a fair claim to fame. I didn’t have much interest in motoring at the time, all I really knew was that there were a lot of rally cars parked up in the huge car park at the hotel we were staying in for a couple of nights in Nairobi, and that there was some sort of rally going on. We were on our way back home to the UK after having spent a couple of years in Zambia. In hind sight, I found out that the hotel was the starting point for one of the stages, an over night stop. Still no idea how it happened, how I got through the check points and barricades, but early morning we found ourselves driving through Nairobi in a hired Alfa sud. With rally cars flashing past us, and a lot of people waving at us, I even remember saying to the wife, that big policeman with the beard didn’t seem all that happy, what’s going on here!. We were eventually forced off the road, after about 15 minutes, and into a side road. That was many years ago, but I did drive in the Safari rally, although unofficially.

On the subject of 037, here’s a spot of Markku Alen from a McKlein photography calendar that I’ve repurposed. The closer you look, the more interesting things you see, other than the car of course.
Particularly like the blokes on the top of the church, including the one lying down...
And the bloke far right/top in the white 'Hoodie' has no head!!
