I think many did that, I bet if you had lifted the bonnets on most of those 6R4’s they would have been 1.0l metros or blocks of concrete under there.

Enzo tried to convince the FIA that the mid engined 250LM was an evolution of the GTO so he could run in the GT class but they told him to get stuffed, he had a paddy, put money into F1 and they’ve not won at Le Mans since

I used to be half decent at Javelin and Discus at school. We had a PE teacher who didn’t think 13 year old would know how to throw or have the strength to throw the javelin very far.
However, at football we always launched the corner flags pretending they were javelins. So basically I’d had about 6 years of practice before they let us loose on the real thing.
Cutting a long story short. We all stood in a line and had to thrown the Javelin down the school field. The PE teacher was 25-30 meters away. Most javelins barely made 20 meters.
So the PE teacher was not paying much attention when I launched my effort.
A second after I had most of us screamed “SIR!!!!!” as he turned his head my javelin whizzed past his face and landed 5 or so meters past him!

He was a bit taken aback but everyone got a Super House Point for (in his words) saving his life!
He admitted to me a couple of year later that he actually had nightmares about the incident.
I’ve a similar story. I mainly used to do 100,200,400 and relay. But I could throw the discus and do a bit of high jump. It was usually the top 2 from each school but sometimes they would let a 3rd in if there wasn’t enough numbers. So I would fill in for the points.
We had a maths teachers who was sacked and went to teach at the Afrikaans school.
We had a competition there and he was officiating the discus. I’d just finished 200 and got called over, no warm up, last to throw.
As I walker over with the discuss he started walking towards me rolling in the tape measure, laughing.....
I thought, right you fusker. Took a quick look over my shoulder to see where he was. Did the old spin and let go, nice and flat, it went off whizzing towards him....I nearly shat myself as it was nearly perfect and would have killed him...he just got out of way.
I apologised profusely, he gave me some more respect on my next throws, but as they went a lot further it was obvious I’d aimed at him.....The headmaster called me in on Monday. Told me off, but laughed as well. This was in South Africa many moons ago.
