There are plenty of Polos on the market - a professional valeter may be able to resolve it, but there’s a risk that their products just mask the smell and it comes back over time. I think either return it, or encourage your daughter to take up smoking ;)

Resolved.
Today VW took the ashtray back without quibble or any cost. I have bought another Polo from them but there wasn’t any question that the old one was going back if they hadn’t come up with an alternative.

Thanks for the strong advice to send it back, feel very glad we did.

Mark.

You can always put a couple of dead fish under the driver and passenger seats, and I bet that within 2 weeks you won’t be able to smell the cold tobacco anymore :)

Good result everyone happy. I remember some years ago my wife had a mini and it started to smell inside. Only slightly at first so I thought maybe it wanted an aircon anti bac treatment. Did that and was a bit better for a couple of days. Anyway steadily got worse. It got to the stage where it smelt as if something had died in the car. I searched high and low shampooed all the carpets searched under the seats and nothing I couldn’t work it out. Eventually I found a tray of 4 rather well matured lamb chops stuck to the underside of the driver seat. All I can think is that they slipped out of the bag under the seat and when the seat was pushed back the seat springs or something picked them up and there they stayed for a couple of months.
