Perhaps not much help, but given this is a safety issue, I would really want a good technician to sort this out.

I have managed to get to the rear seat belts and tested/changed the units, but the airbag warning light remains on. Do I have to get a dealer to turn it off or is there another issue?

I suspect it simply needs resetting by a dealer.

Update: I went to the good people at Carr's in Exeter and it seems that there is an issue with the loom between the ECU and seatbelt. That means I need to get to the connector by the handbrake. It sounds like a pig to get to and even then it could be an issue with the loom! The car measures the resistance in the wiring and when a certain level is reached, a fault is recorded. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I hate to think what a replacement loom would entail. Surely a replacement section could be spliced in, using the existing connector?

Before you do that, did Carrs absolutely eliminate dodgy connectors at the airbag itself? If I recall, mine had a bit of corrosion (suspect from cleaning jet water) which just need cleaning and was fine after that.

The only time I've experience trouble with wiring was when it ran through a moving part like a boot lid (on my old BMW 645i). Very surprising a loom would develop a problem if not running through moving parts.

They definitely said it was a wire issue between the ECU and rear passenger pre tensioner

Update:-
I took out the centre console unit (media centre etc), handbrake cover and cup holder. I was directed by the Carrs guys that a union 'deep below the handbrake' was an issue. I couldn't see any join and in the end disconnected the ECU that is on top of the tunnel below the media unit. I cleaned the connections and refitted and 'hey presto' the Air Bag Warning Light went out!
I refitted everything only to find the warning came back on. I managed to reach the connectors through the drivers side footwell and reinserted them again and the light went out. It seems as though there is a likelihood that when I put the media unit back in, I disturbed the connectors.
Hopefully this solves the problem!

sthb,
Let's hope you have fixed it. The Pre-tensioner circuit is a distinct possibility, as at points it tracks across the car and could have been disturbed, or have an iffy connection..!!

Any updates on this? I have an intermittent air bag light and this may be a common problem...

Yeah I'd read the thread :battered: But with the complex electronics in these cars the solutions can sound a little like "I disconnected the battery, wound the window up and down 3 times, while the boot was unlocked and the ABS light went out" i.e. the best laid plans of mice and ever hopeful owners.

I was just interested in seeing if the problem came back for JSTHB (before I strip out the centre console and lower dash)

Hi Sydney,
Just picked up on your post.
The car is fine, no return of the dreaded light. It took ages to find the solution and was more by a process of elimination. I bought a replacement seatbelt, paid for diagnostics, took most of the boot and rear seats out, removed the centre console and handbrake cover. In the end, had I known, all I needed to do was remove the footwell cover on the drivers side and with a little careful movement of wire, unplug the connections to the ECU and refit.
Obviously, this solved my problem and may not fix yours, but is worth a go, before dismantling loads of things.
Good luck.
