I'm sure I went to look at this car ages ago. Agreed a deal over the phone subject to viewing. Bought a one way ticket on the train to Wimbledon. Ended up buying a return ticket!

Just turned up on Ebay with that Reading auction place.

Yes, just checked back. It was that one. May 2018. Guy wanted £12k then after some discussion he wouldn't take anything less than £10k and that was his reserve. Agreed a deal at £9k.

Then I got a train to Wimbledon to view/collect. What a shocker it was. Old toff in Wimbledon. I told him pretty straight the car wasn't worth £9k and needed a load of work, jobs and money spent to get it decent. I said I would take it on and revised my offer to £6k and felt that was generous. I was tempted to say £7k and take it on but it was a ton of work so stuck at £6k. Loads of little and some big jobs. Wasn't worth it otherwise.

He didn't accept my £6k and I walked back to the train station and bought a ticket back home.

Buy cheap...

2005, 4.2 91k miles, RRZ 6488, MOT til Sep 2022, £5,850

Comes with a spare, unfitted, Larini X-pipe

Bad bits that the owner admits:

1. Few lights on the dashboard which are related. Probably the wheel speed sensor - suspension control, ABS, MSP, ASR,
Was told and read on forums quite a common issue on these due to a wheel speed sensor and never bothered me.

2. Paint Work not so great drivers side, not really visible in photos - Mainly Lacquer issues on:
  • drivers side front wing,
  • drivers door,
  • drivers rear quarter
  • part of boot and here and there
3. One of the front Parking Sensors caused malfunction of parking sensors and 4) Handbrake will need adjusting/ looking at.

Owner does not admit the leather seats look to be in need of a good clean

Hi! Off the top of your head do you recall what the issues were and how much did you think it would cost to repair. Im tempted to bid?

Lovely car but not from that dealer. Caveat emptor
It is by far the cheapest example in Europe and up close at ACA a few years ago it looked ok. Didn’t sell, though.
With the truly rare-groove stuff at MHub, it’s very easy to just dismiss everything. But they do have some unicorns in there - Hartge E34s, a turbo AC Schnitzer E30, a Turbo Technics Merc 190E, any number of pre-merger AMGs, an Alfa 164 Q4. You’re unlikely to find another example for sale in Europe, and they’re two thirds more when you do. If you go into a MHub purchase with the view that it is your only chance to buy, and that you’re going to have to at least part-restore it anyway, it makes sense. That said, you have to weigh the rarity vs the resto costs.
In this case, if that Alpina needs a restoration you might be better off going straight to the £60k one in Sweden. You also have to bear in mind this is a hyper performance car that was at the bleeding edge of what was possibly in 1988/1989 - yes, ‘German solidity’ and all that, but 33 years is a long time, and parts are getting tired and hard to replace. It’s also got a lot of torque and just five gears - do be careful changing down to third and booting it. I believe Alpina had to make its own prop shaft as the torque kept breaking the standard version…
Despite all that, I’d definitely have one. Genuine top ten car, that.

Crikey where do I start and remember. It was one of those that I was so positive to buy/view then was immediately disappointed and back down to reality quite quickly on viewing straight away.

Lots of marks/scratches. The rear near side quarter had a terrible botched repair. A ton of filler and badly sanded/surfaced/finished. So had a crazy paving effect. That would have needed a half near side repair and repaint also likely into rear end to blend in too.

Front end/bumper had many issues with lots of minor damage so ideally would have needed the front end repaired/repainted to be decent. Then I started the car and it seemed a bit noisy even after warning up a bit. Felt that moisture had been in the boot and inside as smelt a bit musty. Maybe not been used much.

Then I started trying all the bits/ electrics. Rear near side electric window went down with a clunk then wouldn't come back up so was stuck down. I suspect part of that side rear quarter damage. Wheels were all kerbed. I asked the guy a couple of questions about the rear repair/window and got the classic.....er not sure....hadn't noticed and maybe it was.done before I bought the car.

Just didn't feel any confidence, honesty or trust in the seller at this point.

Didn't even drive it as it was pointless at that point.

Just felt a slightly unloved less than well looked after example. In my experience when you come across that you often find lots of little bits you don't find unless you inspect deeper/further or rear their head at a later date.

Any thoughts about this

Apart from mileage, 7 owners, painted trident, missing badges on front and rear wings, possible paint mismatch on N/S front wing, odd looking gear selector etc and its current bid of £9500.

makes me feel that my Sport GT with only 4 owners and 54k miles could be worth a bit more!

How about this one?

Looks good value if you like the exterior/interior colour combo and has very clean MOT history.
Recognise this one from last year (and also as the one Jayemm reviewed), I'm not a massive fan of the badges wrapped in black, nor the grey steering wheel - but each to their own!
