Question of the day

Being an evil sort, I would have waited for the exact answer, it would have tied everyone in knots.

As the LHC uses quite a lot of electricity I will ask a question about that.

Which inventor patented a type of electrical motor and generator and thought they could make a machine that would cause earthquakes?

I know the earthquake answer Zep, but as an aside did you know that the largest consumer of electricity at CERN is for the cooling circuits to keep the liquid Helium going around the supercooled superconducting magnets? The beam itself consumes sod-all really.

I did, but then I wouldn't be a good air con geek if I didn't! Is there nothing the vapour compression cycle can't do?

From what I read at the time, an electron volt is a really really small amount of sod-all so all the juice must have gone somewhere...

Not answering the question, but an interesting fact about CERN. When they ran the LEP, they were only allowed to run in the summer as even then, they would be using something like a fifth of the entire French nuclear power output! I don't know what the proportion is now, but probably not too dissimilar!

Nah - CERN uses about 200MW over summer at full chat, which is about 1/3 of Geneva's consumption, so while it's fairly hefty it's only like powering a small town or city. It is all powered from France now though, with the old Swiss power link only there for standby use. You're right about it only fully running in summer though, during winter it drops a lot, otherwise we'd all freeze :D

Clue time. I think i may have spoken about this country before on this thread so this may ring a bell with someone.

This country has the highest crime rate average by population in the world. Total crimes reported each year are on average +20% higher than the total population. The highest it has reached is 1.5 crimes for every resident of the country.

Vatican state?

Vatican City. Population around 800 people. Crimes recorded each year over 1000. Its also the smallest country in the world Monaco being the next smallest at around five times bigger.

The age of consent is 12 years old which is also the age of consent in Angola. It does make me wonder if the age of consent in Vatican City was 16 would the crime rate increase.

Your question Dave.
