Hi all

First I am sorry for not being on the forum for so long as things have been hectic with building work on our hotel and a third child!!

As it says above Im gutted to write that last Monday 16th Jan I had a mishap in my beloved Yellow Ghibli

In short it was picked up on Monday this week and taken down to Andy Heywood at Bill McGraths. The assesor looked at it along with the guys and sadly she has been deemed a total loss. Repair would be in excess of £22,000.00 that is not a typo.....

I have agreed to buy back the salvage but am unsure weather to attempt a re-build. Heart says do, brain & everyone I have talked to says GTF are you mad.................

Very sad day/ year so far for me roll on 2013 is all can say.

One more thing a BIG thank you to David Askew, Andy Heywood for putting up with my never ending & rambling phone calls & Dem and Jim for your kind words.

Peter

Peter, that's terrible news. As P mentions, I hope no injuries?

Was there any particular aspect of the repair that bumped the cost up? Is the chassis shot? or is it just the general scarcity of parts?

Gutted for you and I hope 2012 takes a serious turn for the better.

Morning Frank, Matt & Andy

Thanks for the kind words guys

I'm fine just my pride dented.

With regard to the Xmas doo my wifes auntie died a couple of days before and although we were all in London we had to leave that day & fly to Stornoway (Isle of Lewis) for the funeral. Then back to London and then drive back up home all in all a nightmare!

The car is reparable but would cost around £10K to do it cheeply! so with it being a cat C it is not a sensible path for me to go down although I keep trying to convince myself I should. Most of the parts are available secondhand but the car would have to go on a jig to address a slight kink in the A pillar at roof height the engine may have been compromised due to one of the oil cooler hoses bursting but that would only be confirmed with the bottom end stripped for inspection. As I said before I have the car still at so nothing is written in stone.

I am truly gutted though.

Hi cost of everything in truth. Parts are as high as any new Masser. When I have the payout in my account (should be Wednesday) I will post up the full estimate & Tech report for you all to see. One thing we should all be aware of is the agreed value on our cars I hadf £14K on mine and thought that would cover a med misshap like this but as I now know I should have had around £20K then it would have been repaired & on the reg as just CAT X (Hi value repair)

Always wise after the fact.

If you were going to keep her, the cat C wouldn't matter that much, and if you sold her many years down the line the scarcity of good quality Ghiblis at that point would nullify the rating to someone who really wanted one. Gutted for you.

Gutted for you Peter, I know what it is like to loose something you cared about so much...I still remember the kind offer you mad to me last Summer, and I was rather frightened I may have done the same to it!

If there is anything I can do to help with the re-build, if it goes ahead, let me know.

Hi Peter, really sorry to see that pic - was a lovely car. If there is any upside (apart from you being ok!) at least it hadn't just had its planned respray.

A tough call, and I hate to see cars beiung broken for parts, but I wonder whether it's worth the hassle and cost of repairing - and the risk that you're not 100% happy with it.

Sorry to hear about the prang. It doesnt look *that* bad in the pic, such a shame. I guess parts avaiability is a significant issue.

Hope noe one was injured - at the end of the day, its only a car.....but, as the Fonze once wisely said when someone said the same about his motorbike - "yeah, and my mother is only my mother"

Peter,
So sorry for you, what a crying shame you must be heartbroken. £22,000 to rebuild, where are they getting the figures from, it does not look that bad, unless the other side is worse? If you could find another with bad rear end damage and get it cheap from the scrapper, you may have an option to put her back together.

That's sad to see. The £22k will also include the labour of course so if you're willing to do it yourself then the cost would be considerably less.

Pete,

so your keeping the car...

Look at it this way, you were planning considerable further expense for the Modena Performance route, so the mindset was there to spend more on it already.

Pretend you had lost it completely; stolen. How much would you pay to start again?? To buy the history (other than damage) in terms of outlay/servicing that you know of on this car.

Mabey you just need to bide your time and collect the expensive bits, part by part for a 2013 winter rebuild.

you know you can't let it go; it's not really replaceable.

Give me a bell sometime...
