Parsien..... I have interpreted this offer differently. A return journey must be booked to benefit. For example the outward leg 01.07.2011 Den Bosch to Alexandria (taking prices from standard tarriff) Car £320 plus Bed £450 = £770. Return leg 09.07.2011 Alexandria to Den Bosch (taking prices from special offer) Car plus Bed = £272 TOTAL COST £770 + £272 = £1042. Meals on board would need to be added. I am probably wrong about this..... I usually am!.

Paul

As a comparison the return journey by road from Calais to Allasandria is some 1400 miles. With performance driving this could easily cost £500 or more in fuel. (Based on 18 mpg and 1.5 Euro per litre) I don't know how much the tolls would be, but let's allow £100. Overnight B & B accomodation for two people £100 in each direction totalling £200. Plus wear and tear on the car and driver! Conservative TOTAL £500 + £100 + £200 = £800. The gap between road and discounted rail could be closer than you think.

Paul

Not quite Maserati.....the distance listed.......plus you'd have to drive to get to the rail terminus......stick in another 150 miles.......

http://www.rac.co.uk/route-planner/...rue&mapType=interactive&rtype=true&jsOption=1

The RAC states less than half the miles.......674.....even at 1.4 euros per litre roughly £210.......the railsaver.......doesn't quite add up.

The gap is quite a bit bigger!

Can't get my head around a compartment for 2/3 people costing £400 odd on a train.........one way.........?!...is it run by Maserati themselves?...;)

Looked at this myself a few years ago and unless you have a big family and hated driving it does not add up.

For me and Sophie it was a quick blast to Paris, 1 x tank of fuel from Bristol, chunnel and hotel [£80 +£65 + £70], then a full tank to Grenoble, hotel [£80+ £100], then Route Napoleon to Nice then onto Portfino just another tank [£80]. Better views, nice beds, real food and no sweaty train without air-con...we also read the reviews which were not good re quality of rolling stock, beds, food, toilets, windows...and worse of all a unsympathetic oik driving your pride and joy onto the train and people breaking into cars and stealing luggage from the train holding car park whilst you were ussered onto other rolling stock.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/d...nce/2557528/French-Motorail-not-on-track.html

I hope things are better now and I think in principal the idea is great but it needs to be less than the drive and a nice hotel to make me let the train take the strain

Morning P

The RAC route planner figure of 674 miles represents a single journey........ By this estimate the total mileage for the combined forward and return legs is 674 x 2 = 1348 miles.

You're welcome and thank you....... Many years ago (in the days of gas lighting) I used the SNCF motorail service to Narbonne. It was pretty basic......... Although expensive the Allesandria train looked to me to be a bit more inviting.

....but when you break it all down Maserati.....it is a premium product price.......there used to be another motorrail service but its stopped a few yrs ago......

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh......the good old SNCF...........................where, with every ticket sold....came the 50/50 chance of them being on strike the very day of your train journey....;)

Don't get the standards provided by the French Autorail service mixed up with the German.. Having experienced both the DB Autozug (from Dusseldorf) is light years better. Understand that the french and belgium (from Denderleuwe) services no longer run this rail service.
