Rear tyre choice

Some pointers please, Gents

As I'm very nearly on my Rosso's wear bars on the rears, I need to get a pair this coming week or I may end up on the wrong side of the law/ditch.

I want to ask you all for your recommendations and findings on rear tyres, bearing in mind that I have 18" rims on a face-lifted 4200, though with the same suspension and skyhook settings as a GS.

I know this has been covered in at least one previous thread I found, but there were a few that had changed brands fairly recently and promised an update, so maybe a fresh thread may prompt that?

Matt and a few others rate the Falken 452's, largely because of the lack of reinforced sidewalls, though I'm not sure that that's such an advantage on the higher profiled 18's?

In order of priorities my choice would ideally be dictated by:

1 - Progressiveness
2 - Stiffness and feedback
3 - Grip
4 - Good rim protection (rosso's have a great chunky lip of rubber overhanging the wheel)
5 - Low volume
6 - Comfort
7 - Lifespan

The Rosso's on currently feel great for feedback, but are pretty snatchy and unprogressive, but they are right at the end of their life and the quiet lanes near me are very greasy at the moment, so I can't judge them at all fairly. I bought the car recently with the rears at under 3mm.

I'm really going to miss the severe lack of grip at 2mm that I have at the mo, particularly at second gear speeds. It's so easy to hold sideways with the throttle and I'm loving this car for this.

I'm also interested in dropping by 10mm, as I noticed Miles has. I tend to always drive in sport mode if on my own, as normal feels a little too wallowy (and under-damped). This shouldn't affect tyre choice though, but at least this illustrates my ride preference, which does affect it.

All pointers and experiences greatly appreciated

Cheers!

Over rosso's i prefer the Vred sessanta's , Dam good grip in the wet , even better in the dry , miniumum road noise , super tread pattern and side wall embossed with Guigaro, whats not to like , oh year forgot about £80 tyre cheaper , have them on both my 4200 and GS , the GS has done 2 track days and 13000 miles on a new set and still only at 4mm

TMH....got caught out on 18" Vreds this year...not going very fast...hit a pothole...tyre off rim.

If you can guarantee you'll not hit anything with them....you'll be fine....good tyre otherwise.

Plus are your tyres extra worn on inner edge....geo set up too?

Jesus Frank , that manhole must have had no lid on whatsoever to have forced the tyre off the rim , not heard that before , ive split one on a pothole , but then the GS runs on rubber bands , where as the 18" wheels have a much higher profile , so that was a hard one , hope you claimed off your local council

Geo appears to be perfect. Even wear across both rears. Inner wear on fronts, but not severe. So, happy about that.

Bit alarming that a pothole should pull a tyre off the rim! I am very much in the habit of driving around them.

Pothole Loz........doing....35-40 in a queue of slow moving traffic( filhty wet night), didn't see it at all......thought it was just another big puddle...happened in Feb this when I was going to see GT Dan...remember?

Took photos and measurements, got about 80% of it back....had to be recovered home.

Do think that may have happened with any tyre?

I remember reading about that, it was believed to be the reinforcing on the sidewall that was forced through, wasn't it? Was that certain?

Very possibly , probably , ive hit several potholes at speed , the last one at 80mph on the M25 roadworks , not a blemmish initially , 150 miles further on in France it showed its ugly head as a 10" split on the inside edge of the tyre when it blew , little hairy but then i had 10 other massers as back up and support , the lower profile tyres do tend to do this a little more often

But you'd still recommend them though, considering my preferences?

Without any doubt , from my perspective they fit all of your criteria bar the protective rim, the Rosso's seems to be slightly larger , but if they are being fitted to a 4200 (18" wheels) then i dont think that should be an issue, havent heard any bad feedback on them , i reckon there must atlkeast 15-20 cars that have them if not more

Reading between the lines of previous posts, I'm guessing you have a similar criteria with tyres, Loz? A 'pressing on' style of driving. So, a worthy recommendation. Actually, 95% of Maserati owners would be the same if they admit it, that's why we drive them.... except maybe Louis Walsh

I have been known to take it beyond 4th gear and explore 5th and 6th if thats what you mean ,;) sure there are two things i never skimp on , brakes and tyres , bringing up two liluns on my own , and enjoying the faster cars ,it was always my main criteria to be safe as i possibly can

Off track a bit but just fitted Vred winter tyres to my Disco. Hard to get but good value and great tyres.
