Been actively looking as most know on the salvage market for a new project, i'm becoming more surprised each month by the large amount of german cars mainly Audi/Bmw that are making up atleast 40-50% of most the best dealers stock ,

Do you think this relates to the type of driver that buys them or the safety gizmo's that come with the cars , that hence get trashed and are too expensive to repair/replace

Is it all being devised behind the scenes deliberately (in the name of so called safety) but really designed to make you buy new cars at the slightest knock

All seems ridiculous in my eyes , when we are supposed to be going green and preserving the worlds resources , it strikes me they are doing the absolute opposite in the name of world domination and greed

Its almost like white goods "built in obsolescence".......in the case of an accident.......the cost of saving of the occupants from serious injury etc................is a "written-off" car.......fair price to pay?

Who here ever had a badly broken leg......or other serious recoverable from injury....what value would you really put on it?

1K?

5K?

10K?

20K?.....ergo most cars cat c/ded in this case

I have a couple of BMs and I always feel really safe when driving them. However, I do drive them hard so I kind of fit into both parts of the original question. Do I drive them hard because I feel safe? Possibly, but I have thrashed the nuts off everything I have ever had including a couple of old Mitsubishis that felt like they were made out of milk bottle tops! However, BMW do seem to be getting a reputation for having overly aggressive drivers so it might be because of the sales rep fleet image they now have that more are getting wrapped Whatever the reason they are good to drive. A chipped 335D is a fabulous car, very fast and great to drive, but you will have to walk when it snows!

I think the safety issue was adequately covered 10 years ago ,

Looking at the regular monthly quantity of them now frank , the parts required to get these cars back on the road ( without be written off) should be far cheaper , if manufactured parts prices is all about volume , then it would be the case they must now be cheap as chips , but the opposite in fact , keeping prices high serves only to sell more new cars ,we will soon to be saturated with the wrecks left behind

Interesting to see where they go in the next 5 years ,Asia i hope in a big a way as they have gone over here , but i dont think the Chinese will let them penetrate there home market as we have done over here ,

I did a rolling road session where I put my chipped E90 330D on the rollers, it turned out 275bhp and 452lb ft and I can still get low to mid 50s on a run. The guy who organised the day put my box on his 335D and got 339 bhp and 512lb ft and he still gets mid 40s on a run. Performance and economy, what more could you ask for? Apart from Italian style, character and that noise!
