You use an emulator to read from the ECU but that only really gives you the 1's and 0's and an idea of what part of the code the ECU is reading from in real time. From there, its a bit of a guessing game to reverse engineer the code. With 100's of different correction tables on modern ECU's its no mean feat to work out what's what and I'm yet to see somebody do that job 100%. Even if you can digest the code you then need to write a software suite to access and modify the code in a user friendly manner if you want to do a proper job.
