Having missed the centenery trip last year we are planning a 3 week road trip this Summer before finishing off at the Goodwood Revival.

From all who did the trip last year (and others) looking for recommendations on the best roads/routes to take and other recommendations on places to stay and visit.

Planning about 4/5 days down and the same back and then resting up around the lakes in the middle - with a visit to Modena of course.

Thanks

I am off there myself at the beginning of Sept for two weeks...so I may see you about.

My route will be to drive to Grenoble, drive the Route Napoleon A85 to Cannes then collecting the GF from Nice airport and overnight in Monaco. After that the coast road to Portafino, with a short hop on the Auto Strada due to access roads. We will then travel to Bologna for a week, then to Bavano in the lakes for another week.

Home trip via the alpine pass from Bavano to Geneva airport, then with the car a lot lighter with no GF a mad dash home AKA Top Gear style against her A320 Air Buss

DSC_0556.jpgWe had a four night stop at Lake Garda, stopped here, Bellevue San Lorenzo in Malcesine nice hotel, parking etc. Got a room upgrade was stunning. DSC_0562.jpg We then drove up to Germany, did the castles at Hohenschwangau, up to Luxembourg, Belgium, a day in Brugge, then back. Our trip was planned on the way down, then up to Garda and Germany before leaving, but did the majority of the return leg just booking the day before, all worked a treat. There are so many things you could see and do, and so many superb roads. ( Apart from Belgium theirs were attrocious.) Enjoy.

You have got to do the Gotthard Pass, Furka Pass and Susten Pass in Switzerland.

Featured in Top Gear best Road in the world, various car magazines and us generally spectacular.

Good thread and good responses - thank you. This summer holiday is looking like it will involve Provence / Cote d'Azur for a week and then across to the Italian Lakes and route back up probably via Germany and then the Netherlands. The planning needs to start about now so this is all good input.

I found the pass used in the top gear programme to be useless if you are not there 1st thing in the morning...full of motor bikes, camper Vans and mad locals in mini bus's

The Furka is narrow in many parts, so a bit more for the views. The Susten has wide open stretches.

Little traffic on these 2 passes during the week... used on the terre di canossa rally... Lots of bikers on sundays...
Passo del lagastrello and passo del cerreto.... At the top of both passes are ski resorts .. Both quite close to modena.. Good eateries search menu km 0....image.jpgimage.jpg

Having said that...how dangerous is to drive fast on these roads? I mean, the Stelvio is on the Italian side, meaning that the carabinieros(police) are not so strict, but what does happen with their Swiss collegues?

Nikos; we didn't hang around long enough for them to catch us :D We did have the locals shaking their fists at us and even standing in the road at times!

Great feedback although I think I may need to extend my holiday to fit it all in.

Please keep it coming
