Would have thought that as switching it on makes harder, if you can't swith on it would remain soft.

The system has to actuate the firmer setting, but happy to be proved wrong.

I think a fault removes all power to the actuators which close them, which makes the damping stiff, but happy to be proved wrong.
Be thankful it's not like my Citroën C6. There is absolutely zero compliance except for that in the tyres when there is a failure in any of the hydraulic systems. It makes your teeth rattle and fall out..

Yep , Unpowered Skyhook dampers will become firm ( Maximum Damping ) as the default failsafe.

Not much of a lag on mine either

Last person I suggested this to it actually fixed their skyhook problems so it's worth a shot... try unplugging your Skyhook ECU cleaning the connections with contact cleaner and reinstall it.

If you feel up to it go for a drive with the ECU unplugged to see if you can feel a difference... You will have a skyhook error light and the dampers will be rock hard. Also no skyhook brain so the car behaves differently (more oversteer).

The ECU is located on in the LHS of your trunk/boot above the CD changer

As with all of these things approach with caution and at your own risk

Also if the ECU is actually fitted ? The Skyhook ECU can be removed from the 4200 and will not show as a fault. Had this once and when new ECU was fitted it showed fault light. This was due to faulty damper and accelerometer.

Is that ECU is the one in the left side of the trunk? If so, yes it's there. :)

Yes , it should have Sachs or CDC on label. If it’s plugged in are you sure its powered ?
You could test this by unplugging one of the front accelerometers in the engine bay. If the ECU is powered and connected correctly to the Dash you should get a suspension warning at some point after ignition on. Plugging it back in “should” clear the fault after cycling ignition again.

Thinking outside the box a little here.

Put the car on a ramp in normal with a transmission jack and some bathroom scales in between under each wheel.

Move the transmission jack pump and read the weight on the scales.

Repeat in Sport.

Could do it with a hydraulic jack and measure the handle swing for consistency?
