Something fishy

Just wondering fellow owners thoughts on this one.

My 4200 GT Coupe went in the garage for a service + MOT yesterday. All was fine at 5.30 PM last night (passed MOT, service done and locked in the garage for the night). This morning I received a call to say it looks like your car has clutch problems, we can't move it. I went down there and tried it myself and the clutch pedal depresses and the gear stick moves into gear but the car won't drive.

Ok so there may be a problem but how does a car that is fine when put into the garage, fine and locked at 5.30PM with no signs of any clutch/gearbox problems suddenley completley go overnight when stationery and locked ?

Has anyone ever seen anything go suddenley like this with no warning and any idea what it might be ?

The garage in question say they can't look at it so have sent it to a sister garage that can to find out what the issue is. Unless anyone has any thoughts only thing I can think to do is wait and see what they say the issue is and call in the AA for a second opinion to see if the issue was caused by the garage.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Thanks as always in advance

Hi Stephen, firstly sorry to hear of your problems.

I take it this is just a local garage?

Better to take it to an indie garage so they can check it out on the SD2 reader.

Are you sure it was secure in garage, not taken out? Was there a mileage reading on the MOT cert, see if it matches whats on it now?

Hoping it aint too serious,

P

Hi Stephen,

Sorry to hear of your problems. Referring back to your previous post, this does seem like a linkage failure. What happened when the engine was fired up after being left overnight? Was it left in neutral and now just revving freely irrespective of the gear lever position? Is your car at a Maserati garage? If not, what are they referring to for the service schedule? Do you have a service report? Sorry; lots of questions, but they might help direct you to the cause, and also where the responsibility lies.

Hard one as Miles has stated, definately check mileages against the new MOT , its not above the realms for things to go amiss whilst in storage or in transit even , we had one chap whoi waved good bye to his 3200 on the back of the trailer to be taken to an indie , arrived at the indie with seriously kerbed wheels and minus his original tyres ( so ***** does happen ) lets hope this is not the case and its a linkage out of sync and needs adjusting , preferably use a recommended indie familiar with adjusting 4200 gear linkages , it will take less than 20 mins and save a lot of farting about trial and error , if for some reason it is the clutch ,fortunately there is a manual one on ebay at around half price from either Dick Lovets or Synter group , keep us posted as to how things progress

I have to echo Miles way of thinking here. I am not experienced on the manual gbox but it does sound like the car is in neutral regardless of the stick position.

The first thing to check is that the clutch pedal is moving the clutch arm, probably associated with a creaking noise of the clutch cover being flexed. Then its pretty simple with it up on a ramp to see if there is a selection issue.

Great call on checking the mileage on the MOT they can take it for a test drive as part of the MOT so if its 5 miles over this is allowable. Most MOT testers don't bother with the test drive but it's amazing how many do when it's a Maserati!!!!!
