Steering Wheel Leather

Hi Guys,
When I went to buy the car it was mint as this is David's old car but the leathe ron the steering wheel was all bubbled up. They promised to get it fully fixed before I pick the car up which they did and when I went to coolect it, looked perfect.

However, two or three days later the bubbles appeared and they claim this is the norm with these cars. I think their guy did a ****** job and just warmed it up and stuck it back on so I have asked them to send the guy over to fix it. They have been very illusive and said bring the car over and the guy will fix it. But I am standing my ground why I have to drive up 50 miles to them to fix the fault they should have fixed in the first place.

You guys have had any experience of this? Do you know why this problem occurs and ways of fixing it? Properly I mean.

Many thanks

Andy

Andy

Sorry to hear this. I was going to fix but then decided to trade in.

As far as I remember there were a few threads on this "over the road". It's quite a common thing and can be fixed by yourself but in your situation I agree they should be the ones sorting it out.

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers

Hi Andy,
The leather is stuck to the plastic airbag cover with glue which denatures over time, causing the leather to lift and create 'bubbles' (unstuck areas) which don't look great. There have been a number of suggestions on how to fix this, including injecting PVA glue into the unstuck areas and pressing it back down. The best method is to detach the airbag from the steering wheel, peel the leather off and restick it with PVA glue...There's a long post about this on the other forum...

Thanks Guys,
I was going to attempt this myself but thought that they should as it was part of our agreement.

I did read somewhere that they wet the leather then heated it to stick back which meant the leather contracted and was tightened.

I wasn't sure how tricky it was to take the center off because of the airbag but as the dealers are nothing more than useless I think I should do that.

Cheers again

Well, having read the thread on the other side I decided that actually, I would much rather do this myself than trust anyone else. This being the car that it is I thought they wouldn't have a clue how to remove the air bag etc. so they would try to do a quick fix which I don't want really.

There are two questions I have: 1- They mention disconnecting the battery, does this mean fully disconneting or just truning the knob that disengages the battery?
and 2- What glue is best? I don't want to do the job more than once so I want to make sure I use the right glue so if anyone knows then very much appreciated.

Many thanks

You want to use a spray contact adhesive, any carpet shop will sell it. Also use heat on the leather first, it will make it much more pliable be able to manipulate it easier.
