Swiss Quattroporte visiting the uk for some TLC

Hi Everyone,

I am a Brit living in Geneva and my 2006 QP is heading northbound to Shiltech for some TLC during the last week of April. She's done 75k miles and is still going strong. You should count yourselves lucky that the uk has so many indy Maser specialist because its main FM dealers here only and believe me you don't want to know Swiss labour rates (if you consider minimum wage here is more than 20 pounds per/hr you get the idea). So even with the tolls and fuel the work will be much less than here.

In the past 12 months i had to have the variators (ouch!) and alternator replaced in addition to winter boots and the annual service. Clutch is fine. I want Geoff to do a major service and do any work required on the suspension (bushes, check the alignment, shocks, etc.), brakes and 4 x new pzeros. Basically i am trying to do my best to ensure another 12 months of avoiding major components going. I think i have a bearing on the way out. I will report back on the diagnosis and service but i've heard great things about Shiltech and Geoff has been super responsive so far.

Cant wait for the journey up over the Jura to Dijon and then blasting up through France. No doubt some strange looks on the UK roads when a CH plated left hook QP fires up. Here's hoping its trouble free!

Happy Easter to all.

Cheers
Tim

Thanks for the kind welcome and intro. I will be arriving on 26th April to 1 May. I've been lurking on the forum for a while and you can see my agony posts on Maser Life re: variators. I've owned 6 alfas before now in the uk (lived near Chester and Mangoletsi) and UAE and i love Italian cars.....one of the benefits of living here is the promixity to italy. Doing the italian GP in Sept so hope to get on the good side of the Tifosi turning up in the qp. It has its quirks but what a fantastic car!

Enjoy your trip. Keep the winter tyres on; the way things are it'll still be snowing at the end of April!

Thanks Noor........but i need to replace my summer pirellis and the price i have got in the uk means this is a no brainer. So i will take the winter sottos off before i come back. Front Pzeros are about gbp 400 a pop here! Rears almost 500! We remove winters in late April here so the uk should be fine by 26 April....famous last words......

A big welcome to the forum Tim.........Sounds like a great trip.....I did the Italian GP in 2001....a great experience as there are no other fans like the Tifosi......Enjoy.

What is the condition of the winters coming off Tim; would they be worth another forum QP owner collecting them for next winter use (1.6mm legal minimum)?

Winters are just not so easily available to try out over here it seems.

Hello Sir,
They were brand new on last October(19") and probably have 5mm on easily.....but garages store your winter tyres here so I need to keep them for next season. My summer ones are getting close to minimums so these are the ones I need changing. I will be returning back to Geneva on 1 May.

I'll post some photos later. I detailed the beast with my Meg's G220 (ultimate compound with megs foam pads, AG Ultra Deep Shine, AG cleanser and then AG High Def wax, etc.) last Thursday and she looked the dogs. By the way not easy here as washing your car outside the house is a no-no. I do so, but the use of snow foam would be pushing the friendship.......and plod would be round in no time.

Cheers

No problem Tim, just the earlier part of the thread read like the winters were being left behind/junked I'm not one to see things going to waste :)

Is it a bye law.......hence the police......Tim?

Hi Parisien,
Yes...Switzerland's a Federation of different Cantons and each Canton and each village seems to have its own byelaws! The neighbours are actually very tolerant and many have come and admired the beast. In many ways its old fashioned (shops closed on Sundays, very specific times you can use mowers, etc. and defo not on Sundays). But its very civilized.

The Swiss care for their cars.....there are a lot of 24Hour self service wash places with heated sprays but you see all the usual a-holes dropping the brush.....so what I do is blast all the **** off with the lance and then come back and wash the QP at home with Zymol (low foam). To be honest, I think they don't want harsh chemicals in the water course but everything I use is pretty environmentally friendly....

Cheers

Hi All,
Getting ready for the 760miles from Geneva to Shiltech on Thursday. I just pray no issues.....As usual with Maser, i can't be confident that there wont be issues! in the last few days the car seems to be twitchy and as per an earlier post it can be best described as what feels like play in the front wheels...a bit like mild torque steer in a front wheel drive car or a bit of an issue with power steering. Not all the time. Just on uneven surfaces. Will not take any fast corners and let Geoff have a good look at it on Friday.
Will let you know how i get on.

My old 3200's at Shiltech early next month too. It's in for a clutch, starter motor and a few other things, then a big thrash down to Nice through Germany and Switzerland.....

I'm not to keen on driving down though France, anything with a GB sticker on it seems to be a target

Hi Tim
If you have a CH plate in France your fine, but a GB, you attract all sorts of unwanted attention especially at 150mph:shy2:
