Found another way to access the boot when the battery is dead..............noticed my battery was getting weak, bought a new one and gave it a full charge. A few days later, tried the boot release button, absolutely nothing left in the battery. That's OK, I'll use the key to operate the manual release. Key turns but boot doesn't release. Snookered. Released the number plate light trim and could see the cable had about 20mm free play so key mechanism wasn't reaching the cable nipple. Pulled the cable with long nose pliers ...........it didn't move. Still snookered. Must find another way to supplement the power supply to the battery. Never mind all the other attempts - the final solution is under the bonnet. On the nearside mounted on the bulkhead (see photos) is a hefty red cable with a junction box to the starter motor and (I guess) the fuse panel in the passenger footwell. With the new battery I connected the jump lead (positive !!!!!) to the junction box and the negative to the engine as an earth. Pressed the boot release button and YIPPEE it opened. This method may save others the frustration I "enjoyed." I will check out the failure of the cable release mechanism and will report back.
Having found the side effects of surgery for an inguinal surgery causing discomfort with the operation of the clutch on long drives, I have sold the 4200 and bought a Mercedes CLS auto diesel. My left side is now at rest when driving.
Hope that I have contributed something towards the forum with some "how too's" and say goodbye, Dave.
