Tips for Surrey Hills to New Forrest road trip

For my Birthday my kids have treated me to a 24hr classic car hire.

So on Wednesday I am picking up a 1964 Merc 190SL in Weybridge and taking a nice country drive to a half decent hotel in the New Forest.

I am thinking a meandering route in and around the Surrey Hills and taking in lunch, and then heading the New Forest in the afternoon.

Heading back Thursday morning.

So anyone got any tips of roads or villages to include on my route, let me know. Oh, and a pub on the Surrey Hills for a light lunch

Thanks

Given the 190SL of that era is very low powered, I would be going for b roads all the way!

Not sure where in the Surrey Hills you are starting but assuming Dorking, i would include Wotton, Abinger Common, Holmbury St Mary, Ewhurst, Cranleigh, Chiddingfold, Petworth, Midhurst, Petersfield, East Meon, Corhampton, Morestead, lunch in Winchester (Gandhi or Palm Pan Asia?), Kings Somborne then pick a route south to Lyndhurst or wherever you are headed in the Forest. The Pig?

Thanks Guy, it’s the shape of the Merc I have gone for rather than performance and chose the 190 over the S2 etype. Mrs Scaf likes a cruise, not a spirited drive.

I think the kids booked the Montague Arms at Beaullieu.

and hopefully on such picturesque roads it will be a joy! Don't forget to stop and take pics!

...

Wadebridge? or Weybridge?

The Test valley is nice, and the minor roads in quite good condition.

The Peat Spade pub was really good last time I was there - in 1981, and seems to have gone upmarket since then. Or the Mayfly, which is still good, despite having become very commercial.

What a wonderful gift, Sam. You have thoughtful offspring. Places like Shere, Abbinger Hammer and Coldharbour are beautiful and well worth navigating through even if you don't stop.

So I have mapped a route that takes in most of the suggested towns and villages.

We may deviate a little depending on how time goes.

A nice pub suggestion on that route above would be the Percy Arms in Chilworth. Used to be my local, great steaks in there.
Will return there myself, after the Shere Hill climb on the 3rd September for a late Sunday roast.

There's a good gin distillery and vineyard at the bottom of the climb to Newlands Corner on the ?A25 near Sheer - we'll be visiting it next week
