Tyre Pressure Monitor sensors in 2004 QP?

As above is my 2004 QP (04 plate) likely to have TPMS? The new wheels I bought have the sensors in apparently so if the car can't make use of them I can whip them out and sell them on ebay...

Anyone have any knowledge of this?

Cheers

It's unlikely. I have TPMS on my GranTurismo. You press the button that toggles between showing the two trip computers, heated seat status etc and it shows each wheel's pressure as one of the pages.

Nick,

The tyre pressure monitoring system fitted to the QP is not standard equipment. It is has to be specified as an extra. The system is calibrated by pressing and holding the button fitted in the roof control panel above the rear view mirror. The sensors themselves have an integral disposable battery. This means that after some five years or so all four sensors will need changing. This costs about £500 altogether.

Thanks Paul...

I have the tyre button in the panel above the rear view mirror but it doesn't seem to do anything. I've tried holding it down for a while and just pressing it briefly but it doesn't seem to do anything either way. There is nothing in the "settings" menu either about tyre pressures so I'm guessing I don't have it as an option on my car... if this is the case then I have 4 tyre pressure sensors for sale as they came with the new wheels I bought!

I had to replace a full set on the Sport GT at inspection, you'd need to have a Main dealer or Indie to check if they work before you sold them. As mentioned above, they have around a 5 year lifespan.

Nick,

I am not an expert but this is my understanding. When new tyre pressure monitoring sensors (TPMS) are installed the Maserati specialist will make a note of the serial numbers. This data is then fed to the car so that the on board electronics will recognise the TPMS. Without this programming even if you have the correct software fitted the system will not work.

Paul,

That's right as I understand it too, getting the ecu to talk to the sensors is the tricky bit which requires a specialist.

Cant you just change the batteries on them Dicky?

You have to enter the serial numbers of each of the sensors into the SD3 and state where each serial number is located e.g Serial Number XXXXXXXXXX N/S/F.

Once the data is inputted, the SD3 goes through a recognition cycle and programmes everything correctly. This bit is never easy and usually multiple attempts are needed.

Correct Noor, you need the sensors which are almost £100 each and new valves too, plus fitting, plus VAT. As Noor says, it's also a ball ache to configure them.

The TPMS system on my QP gave me more trouble than any other part of the car. It was constantly throwing errors! I replaced countless wheel sensors and receivers, but the errors just seem to come back after a matter of days. In the end i just gave up, and had the TPMS system programmed out of the car.

Thats a shame Noor, plus one thing you don't want is constant errors. Are identical systems fitted in other cars, do they give the same bother?

All useful, thanks. I think someone told me that the VW Group product was the same as well.

In 18 months the TPMS on my car has been first rate but I guess it will deteriorate as the car gets nearer to five years old.

Can you programme more than one sensor into each wheel location so that you can swap between winter and summer tyres/wheels with their own sensors in place?

The last time I looked at the screen on the SD3 there was only a option for one sensor, but ill find out definatively later on..

Had these on my 607 made by Velo...more trouble than help so I too had them turned off.

I think that these products are very mixed. I bought the Tyrepal system for my Land Rover and within a year I had it on a shelf as the readings were inaccurate, often did not appear and one of the sensors cracked (stone?) and the company were not interested. A waste of money to my mind.

The TPMS on my Maser has been great and when I went through an unseen pothole a few months back it alerted me straight away to the serious loss of pressure (rip on inside edge of tyre) and gave me the confidence to drive home as the pressure kept above about 10psi on the way.
