i would also suggest MP supercars, have never used them myself but heard very good things about them.

Now P K Supercars and I was in there yesterday afternoon for what should have been 10 minutes but turned into 2 hours.
In my search for a car I was recommended to speak to them and happened to be in their area yesterday and stuck my head in the door. 5 minutes after I arrived Phil came in who was literally on his way back from holiday and we spent the next 2 hours talking and driving Maserati.
Struck me as very informed but more importantly genuine enthusiasts which counts for a lot in my book.
I won't be going past them when I get a car.

Hi all,

I had a yellow check engine warning light on my dashboard while on a holiday in scotland:ohh: - the car is with Grey Paul Edinburgh now while I have to take a train back to london...

Anyway the dealer called and said the warning light is due to "Rh timing variator solenoid valve dis-connected", so they need to replace a soleniod valve. The quote i got is £107 on parts and £754 on labour!!!

Is this sort of price i should expect from a maserati dealer? and would you suggest any good independent dealers around Edinburgh?

thank you very much!

CKStorm, what's the diagnosis? It would be good if you can report back on the fix and if your Maser is back on the road?
Cheers

hi guy, here is the latest:

-car is fixed, edinbugh greypaul done the job and did road test, they said everthing is fine, final price is ~£900 but my warranty will cover that

but:

-the "can of beans" noise still exist.. that sound doesn't seems related to the engine as edinbugh greypaul said they happy with the engine, they are the offical dealer so i choose to trust them on this case. but need to find out the reason of that noise and suspect could from the computer / multimedia system as i install a bluetooth music system a few days before that sound.
anyone has any suggestion?

- i found there are a few scratches & gouge on the front bumper when looks like done by the towing company, currently claiming that with AA...

Hi,
The can of beans noise should only be on start-up and for 2 or 3 seconds at that. Otherwise the variators themselves may be goosed. I had them replaced and check valves installed by Maserati and it was a 5k job. Do a search on ML and you'll see this is a big issue. Suggest you get the car to your normal dealer and don't get the fob off...as its a £5-9k job.
Cheers

Hi Tim,

thanks for your input.

is this video described your can of beans noise? is it only happen for 2-3 sec when start up?

if so i think mine is different problem as a) i don't have it at start up, only while i am driving; b) the noise is not from exhaust but from the front part of the car when i am sit inside

anyway definitely going to bring it to dealer to solve the problem

The issue is more of an initial "clatter" from the engine once you turn the key. Many Masers have it usually on cold start-ups and seems to affect both wet and dry sump cars. It doesn't itself seem to be a problem as long as the clatter is momentary. If you are getting a click click click sound which is evident at idle and when driving then thats a sure sign the variators are up the creek.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Nah, that will be your valves in your exhaust rattling, my GTS did the same. You can lube them which helps.

Basically the secondary air vacuum is low on start up and takes time to build.

Try stating in and out of sport and see if that helps.

Standard 2006 QP does not have exhaust valves.....its the lifters clattering until pressure builds. It affects many QPs and Grand Turismo's.....a lot of folks had variators replaced under warranty involving check valve installation to avoid the issue.

But we are talking GranCab here which is the 4.7 and thus has the valves does it not?

Will be interesting to know because I was getting a noise on start up comparable to the old can-o-beans. Filled up the oil, just under 1ltr and no noise again. You know the checking procedure?

Yep and apparently some folks find a higher viscosity oil helps too - I've heard some FM dealers using 10W60 oil which helps both this and also lifter/tappet noise.
