Very jerky gear change when cold

I took delivery of a 2009 Gran Turismo 4.2 with 15,000 miles on the clock, just before Christmas, which has so far been lovely.

The one thing that I have noticed though is when cold, and I try to let the car idle for a few minutes before pulling away, the automatic gearbox is very jerky when changing from 1st to 2nd (I think, or maybe 2nd to 3rd) even at low revs and when being driven carefully, as I am assuming that one should before the temperature needle gets anywhere near normal.

Is this normal behaviour as some of the changes are almost violent and cause ones head to be bashed against the head restraint! :-0

I haven't noticed this behaviour when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

Thanks for any advice......

Hi Bobby.
this works with the MC-shift cars, and hopefully will do teh same with yours....
When starting the car, turn ignition to 11 (i.e. where all the warning lights come on) and then press the accelerator to the floor (twice) slowly, then start the car...you'll be amazed at the difference!

I've not experienced this (have a 4.2) indeed after some weeks sitting idle its always ok. My only thought is do you have the Sport mode engaged? That can be a little 'sharp' particularly when cold.

For me choosing the "icy" mode seems to tame the beast until the car warms up. I switch it off after a mile or so. Ragging it off the drive upsets the neighbours anyway ;o)

I also drive mine in ice mode a lot as it misses out 1st gear. The change from 1st to 2nd can be a bit jerky in slow traffic which is why I use Ice most of the time in normal traffic - manual apart from that.

I remember reading in the handbook (yes I did read it) somewhere that until the engine oil reaches a certain temperature the gearbox will only change up above 2,850 rpm (IIRC). When the whole car is cold that can feel jerky but is quite normal.

Thanks for all the advice.

I have been careful in monitoring the smoothness (or total lack of!) gear change in all conditions (cold, warm, everything in between) but none of the suggestions here have seemed to have worked.

I have even asked the opinion of a friend of mine who happens to work at a Maserati main dealer and he doesn't think that it is right either so I am getting my local dealer to check it out in the next few weeks.

I'll keep you posted.

they are a bugger when cold especially in reverse, try the accelerator trick - it does work. Most of us do it i think

Good luck!
My wife said she saw a GTS ( I've taught her the difference between models) reversing the other day and he was having issues and it stalled.

It could be that you need your PIS point adjusting on the clutch..??

I don't know what that means but.......

Using the ICE but from cold does seem to work (but can't be normal).

Maranello of just done some sort of reset on the gear box so we'll see if that helps!

Maranello did some sort of reset on the gearbox and it is almost totally cured! They told me that the gear box 'learns' or adapts to your style of driving (so either I am a rubbish driver or the previous owners were!)

Anyway, it is a huge improvement so well done Maranello.
