Oh yes, it’s still on. We have a minor inconvenience in that all of the Portsmouth sailings are now 33 hours, which is two nights on the ferry. Or we have to sail from Plymouth, which is the best bet I’d say.

Is Roman Abromovich's big yacht not going spare?

I'm not sure this is correct.

From Portsmouth there are 4 sailings / week - 2 to Santander and 2 to Bilbao. One of the Santander crossings is definitely 2 nights on the boat (I've just done it), but I don't think the other one is. Santander to Bilbao is about 1 hour, and a lot more pleasant than the slog to Plymouth (unless you happen to live that way).

The one advantage of 2 nights on the boat is that you arrive at 8am - so you should have managed to sleep off the excesses of the night before. Although, on balance I think it is a little bit tedious.

Also the Commodore Club is well worth paying the money for - or even better get a swanky cabin and get it included.

If you can find a crossing from Portsmouth to Santander / Bilbao on or around the 16th of September that is less than 33 hours, I’ll happily pay a finders fee. I think you will be disappointed though.

Better than cheap flight to Spain and a truck?

Yes, sadly. The trucks to Verona and from Arenzano were circa £1200. You can add a fuel surcharge to that and £500 for paperwork that has come in since we split from Europe. Probably more like £2k now. Plus flights.

Plymouth it is then.. 15.45 departure also means a drive down with no need for a hotel the night before.

You are completely correct - my mistake.

My only excuse is that I've spent much more time looking into crossings going the other way.

Also - from what I've been looking at - some of the crossings are pretty full already only reclining seats left. That is from Spain to UK around 20th September - UK to Spain might have more availability. The Brittany Ferries website is pretty pants - you have to check each crossing out individually and get pretty much to the end of the process before you can check the availability of accommodation - AND they don't have any concept of a waiting list - you have to check regularly to see if any cabins have become available.

Might I suggest the UEX train? Goes from Verona to Dusseldorf overnight and you sleep in a cabin. Cuts a 1000 miles off and a night. Not sure if the dates work but it's there.
