Warranty recommendations

Hi,

I'm considering getting my own warranty in place for my 2008 QP following poor response/ cover/ slow payment and crazy low hourly garage rates paid by my existing warranty provided by the dealer when I bought the car. I'd be really interested in your own experiences and recommendations with Warranywise, Warranty Direct etc. etc.

Can't be stumping up extra for what I think is better cover then finding out its a dud if something expensive goes t*ts up. Cheers.

I was a bit worried by the 'not covered due to wear and tear' and items which have been publicised as regular issues on Google search etc., seemed like there were plenty of grey areas that a 7 year old car might get rejected on?

My experiences with WarrantyWise were excellent. My car had their highest level of cover for 12 months when I bought it from Nuvola, and all work was done by my local MD and without quibble or delay. In fairness the garage was also very good at dealing with WW, which surely helped. They also commented that WW in their experience was second only to the Maserati warranty.

When the warranty came to end I decided the £2.5k cost to renew would be better put in a war chest instead.

Not much. That was two years ago so I have a theoretical £5k in saved warranty costs. I also have a lovely new stove in my lounge and have finally got my roof mended. The war chest ain't what it should have been, but the money was spent well.

The car went in for a service today complaining about an alarm fault, a parking sensor fault (very common in these) and with MC Shift mode complaining "gear unavailable" before finding the gear. Again, not an uncommon issue but with an unknown cause. So I could be in for a few quid of running repairs which on a three to four year old car I would have been confident the warranty would cover, but they could all have been a tougher argument on a car which has just tipped six years old.

I'm happy that I made the right call in not renewing the warranty but caveat that I made the decision following a thorough inspection which highlighted no imminent major issues (insofar as these things can ever be predicted).

I'd probably be more confident with the war chest if the car wasn't appriaching 8 years, but as you say, I could get into difficult conversations if something scarily expensive pops up. It's not hard to hit a £5K problem in a Mas, and wear and tear would I'm sure come into the defence case for the warranty company.

We used warranty direct on the RR and they did cover wear & tear - over £10k pay out over two years for under £1,5k premium (total). Always ask for the betterment clause removal, costs £50 and will save you thousands

It's a good point re wear and tear. Mine may well have covered it. Some of the issues it dealt with would arguably have been classified as such. Let's face it, there comes a time in a car's life where all issues can be attributed to wear and tear. I'm starting to feel the same way myself when I look in a mirror

In any case, I was happy to take a gamble on not spending £2.5k on a warranty. It's a car I'd go to know pretty well and the garage that looks after it was happy with it so I reckoned I'd go solo. It has to be said, the knowledge contained in this forum was a big help in being happy to take the plunge into warranty-free Maserati ownership.

Just took up WD
Did it on line and came in at £1600, 'phoned them up and it miraculously dropped to £1400.
Deal went through no problems, but it remains to be seen if they are any good................

What car / year is that on, Dave? And what level of cover? Very interested to see how it works out. Keep us posted.

FYI, WarrantyWise for mine:

Got what looks like a great deal with warranty direct a few months back. 3 year deal with wear and tear included and their most comprehensive cover for £1200 per year. Negotiate hard. WD also sent someone to inspect the car and check my service documentation. Haven't had to claim yet though so I cannot comment on what that would be like but the cover looks reasonable for the money.

Hi Adam
Yes 2007 QP, a guy came along for an inspection, lasted about an hour, short drive
checked aircon and sat nav, oil condition on dip stick, not much else really

My WD policy supports main dealer labour rates throughout the term at full cost, but new for old parts cover drops as per the table below as the car gets older. Still reasonable for 1200 quid I thought.

Vehicle age or Mileage Parts - Labour
Up to 6 years or 60,000 miles 100% -100%
Up to 7 years or 70,000 miles 80% - 100%
Up to 8 years or 80,000 miles 70% - 100%
Up to 9 years or 90,000 miles 60% - 100%
Up to 10 years or 100,000 miles 50% - 100%

I've had a sensible conversation with WD now, based on the great advice here re- betterment etc. When I talked it through with the WD rep initially lots of potential big ticket stuff wasn't included, motors, suspension, betterment to name just 3, so need to be very specific to understand what's included and what isn't. I'm waiting for underwriter approval on those items now, but with an inspection it shouldn't be a problem. I'll let you know when I get the final 'everything included' figure to see how they stack up.
