Water leak from rear screen

Hello All.

I have been investigating water I have in the boot of the GT. After checking for all the common issues, including resealing the boot hinge, I have trace the water back to the corner of the rear screen, or that's as far as I can get with my endoscope once removing all the interior panels.

Has anyone else had this problem? I'm hoping it's the bonding and not the seal, I understand the seal is only available with the screen unless anyone knows of a universal seal?

Thanks. Jason

I had this problem some years ago. Water pooling in the boot that was eventually traced to the rear window seal. I had mine sorted by a main dealer, they managed to remove the screen, reseal and refit it.

I realise that probably wasn't very helpful because it doesn't actually answer your question.

Good luck anyway.

Perhaps you can run isolated tests by pouring water down different parts of the windscreen and observing when the water starts pooling. Start from the bottom left, the bottom middle and then bottom right; then move up and repeat. Obviously you may need to leave some time between each isolated test to give the water a chance to ingress.

If you do find an isolated point of entry, you may be able to fix short term with a product like this which seems to have good testimonials for problems like this…

You could apply blue chalk all the way round the inside seal of the rear screen. Close the boot and then hose the whole of the rear screen down for a few minutes and then leave to stand for 10 mins or so. Give the water time to ingress.

Then you should be able to see when you open the boot again the chalk being wet and darker in colour where the water is finding a way into the boot. The highest point being the point of entry into the boot which will probably be lower than the actual seal failure point.

You can either use one of the silicone sealants for screens to seal at the point of entry but it will possibly find another point of entry in the future.

The alternative is take it to autoglass and have them to a look. There is a similar thread with a 4200 or GS on here where autoglass fitted a new seal round the outside of the screen to seal it. No idea if thats possible on the GT but worth a call / visit i suspect.

Thanks for your help.

I like the chalk idea although it's leaking through to the rear quarter panel somewhere and can only just get an endoscope in there. It's odd the cabin is dry, only the boot it wet, I have the alcantara headlining the B pilar trim is completely dry.

I have left a few messages for windscreen companies to see if they can reseal it and will add Autoglass to the list. I use it as a daily drive and would prefer to have put it right first time, although a temp fix would be good given the first company said thanks, but no thanks today. I will try water testing it at different points.

Hello All.

I thought I would give an update on this. It turns out the leak was coming through the roof / rear quarter panel seam, which is under the roof trim moulding. After sealing this the leak has stopped.

I had the glass removed and resealed, however they reassured me it was not leaking. If you need a glass company in the Oxford area Botley Windscreens removed the rear glass and resealed.
