WHAT TO REPLACE A TVR CHIMAERA 500 WITH?

I had another chat with the seller on the manual grey 4200. I've offered £15k as I thought that was a fair price at the moment. It is on its original clutch so have to factor in it will possibly need doing soon which is a circa £3k job.

He suggested he had been offered £17k trade by another local dealer which I think is a good deal and suggested he took it. I can't see it any more more more than £15k really though at the moment.

Does anyone think otherwise and think it is worth more?

Also the wing mirror bases look black and not body colour like all 4200"s I've seen. Anyone seen a 4200 with black bases?

I don’t believe a dealer has offered £17k. They then have to fix any bits and bobs, possibly service and MOT it, detail it, add a warranty, store and market it, and make a profit. I agree with you - he should accept £17k if he can get that.

Glad you agree. I obviously take all stories of I've been offered this for it with a pinch of salt. You hear them all the time. No way a dealer would offer £17k unless they knew they could sell it for £22k which I think is unlikely in current marketplace.

I'm sure Dicky wouldn't pay £17k for it.

It does have a few minor issues without looking over with fine tooth come physically. Ring on cupholder, gearshift gaiter discolouration, wing mirror bases, clutch, tyres on PS2 so will be old. I'm sure there will a few more minor issues if the car ends up being strong money.

Good choice - I think it looks a far more mouthwatering proposition than the "a-another blu/tan single clutch, smg coupe" ( :p ) that keep surfacing for low ball money .
I really hope it makes £17K . It's worthy of the price tag IMO - these cars are criminally under valued.
Never seen the interior colour before. I'm not hating on it...
The car looks lovely. That's a turd you could polish ! :)

What do people think is a fair price for this one:

It is a dealer that has taken in it part ex and seems a lovely guy on the phone. Just had a nice chat with him. Looks like a well looked after car but I've never been a fan of that light grey interior on a Maserati. I like the exterior and could get over the interior.

My thinking was another 4200 could make sense for me especially at the prices some of them are. To use more and be less precious about than the garage queen. Trouble is this is probably a bit too good and seemingly higher priced than I can justify. It won't be as good as my 4200 I have but is getting to the price I paid for that.

Although I don't think a manual 4200 is a brilliant example of a manual driving experience it would be something different to my CC. Just shame it isn't priced a little more keen.

I have contacted Steve @ Superior Cars about this one:

Seems like a decent enough example and more suitable to my requirements but still has the grey interior. A fair few higher miles in comparison but not silly high. Clutch and F1 Pump changed recently. Not a fan of the slatted grilles both have but not a deal breaker.

Any thoughts and comments oh wise ones? ;)

I suspect you will compare it to you other 4200 and learn to dislike it if it has any small issues.

I have been offered my previous 4200, but it has not been dealer/garaged serviced for 7 years due to just 3k miles... having it along with my GS is very tempting...but after spending £6k on the GS in the last 2k miles, I want to get some enjoyment out of that and not tempted to sell, so 2 coupes would give me the same issue as above.

I cant agree with you here. Its only got 36K on the clock. These clutches are good for twice this...!
Those 19" GS wheels would have to go though....

Really...do you have a crystal ball?

These clutches can go at 20k or 100k but most sports car clutches seem to be 20k to 40k often. A 15 year old car on an original clutch at 36k is worth less than a 15 year old car with a new or recent clutch though surely.

It might last another 5k miles or 50k but would you buy this car and not price this in?

The tyres are PS2's that were discontinued years ago so will likely be old and should be factored in for replacement. A set is circa £1k.

The devil is in the detail. We all know there cars can eat cash quickly with not much needing to be replaced.

If this car had a new or recent clutch, new or recent tyres and no issues and would have no issue paying £20k. Fact is it hasn't so needs to be priced in IMHO.

I agree. I don't mind a car with some minor issues when it is priced accordingly but to achieve a top price it needs to be mint with no issues.

Shame about your old 4200. Why do people buy a nice car then not look after it?

My 4200 went to AV recently and Voicey had to be pretty critical and fussy to find anything that needed replacing or fixing. Mind you it only did about 250 in last year!

Thanks and I do agree. Was amazing to drive it back from AV last week as drives like a new car.

It isn't going anywhere. Just feel a more usable 4200 is decent value it is seemingly hard to ignore.

The other options high up to replace the TVR are a Mustang or MX5-RF. I know....very different! The MX5 would be straight swap value wise for the Chimaera and the Mustang might need a few k added. However you only live once right!

Well the grey manual 4200 one was listed on eBay as well this week starting at £15k and ended tonight

Not one single bid at £15k and unsold. Says quite about the current marketplace or potential buyers at the moment I feel.

If it was worth the effort they’d do it themselves, they’re a TVR specialist
