What's this box?

Following on from my previous thread, I found this box just dangling inside the under dash carpet. The box has little rubber feet on the under side. Anyone know what this is and should it just be dangling freely like it is?IMG_2707.jpgIMG_2707.jpg

On the 4200 there is a very similar sized box in that location which is the Bridge Can unit which is the body ecu and controls dash and binicle features, abs and suspension.

Altough similar this looks very after market so may be something else.

Looks very aftermarket to me, and *old*

But what it is exactly, no idea. Can you see where it's connected?

No idea but no slieved wires would point to aftermarket or even DIY. The FET really needs to be on a heat sink if it is going to serve any real use without popping!

What car is it on?

Can you take a close up of the black integrated circuits to see what they are for?
I can identity a voltage regulator and 2 digital counters but the rest is either blurred or covered by wires.

Definitely aftermarket or dyi

Just shown it to Alex who is close to completing his HNC in electronic engineering and he was also concerned about the FET (voltage regulator) in thin air with no heat sink but more so about the capacitor dangling over the resistor rather scetchily. The PIC chips are programmable so could be doing anything.

If you follow the wires back, is it spliced in, any hidden switches other than those in the box?

Capacitor is probably ok. Soldered in next to the resistor but bent over slightly to fit in the case. I've seen many similar things in r/c kit.

No idea what it is though. Interesting to have a set of dip switches. Mode change?

Follow the white and brown wires, as connected to a jumper position, they may go to a switch somewhere.

The car is an 06 Gransport imported from the UK. It has no parking sensors - OEM or aftermarket. The cable is really hard to follow. It goes up and over the steering wheel column but that's as far as I can track it. I think I'll have to remove the steering wheel to find out where it goes. Below is a picture showing the IC chips more clearly.

Just a thought given where the wires go then, there is an aftermarket adaption to the indicators to give a 'soft' command as in three flashes and cancel like on most modern cars or full click on and manual or return cancel, this could be the item if you have soft indicators which were not OEM.

Select mode 1 and take it for a drive and see if there is any difference in engine, gearbox or even indicator performance!

Piggyback engine tune ecu?

FD did one and it looks like something they would produce.

I don't recall "soft" indicator function. I'll double check though.
Looks to basic & amateurish for ecu piggyback. Only 5 wires.
