Whirring Noise 35mph-45mph

Hi all,

My 4200 is making a whirring noise between 35mph and 45mph (not a rumble). It Disappears when I go slower or faster and also when taken on a decent drive. As it sounds like something is rubbing against or sticking on I have had the rear discs off and checked the hand brake but still no joy.

I can only hear it from the drivers side rear.

The car has done 40k. Any ideas?

Thanks for the response. I doubt it as have 6mm on them. Could swap the wheel round. Any quick win like that would be great.
You would be surprised at the noises tyres throw up, I hope it is that simple for you mate, I have a noise that I could swear was the diff, it isn't it's the tyres.

air vents on the front discs? Notoriously fragile? handbrake cable rubbing on a drive shaft perhaps? heat shield come loose and hitting the prop? Wheel bearing going?

Is it the same regardless of which gear you are in? If so it is road speed related so probably tyres. If it is at the same engine speed then it could be torque tube / gearbox related.

The noise doesn’t go away when I press the brakes. I will for sure check the hand brake cable and heat shield. I think it’s the wheel bearing tbh. Thinking it about it the noise goes away when I take the car on a decent run hence why I think it might be wheel bearing.

Hi Zep,
Yeah it’s the same noise no matter which gear I am in just speed related.
I think it might be the wheel bearing as goes away when hot. For sure I will do a wheel swop.

Could be. The normal wheel bearing failure is that you get an ABS fault as the sensor ring stops reading long before the bearing itself gets noisy. Hopefully the wheel swap will give you a better idea.

If it is the handbrake there is a tin plate at the top shoe leaver point that fracture. This then flutters about when unloaded.

Air vents touching the front brake discs is indeed what I had on my former 3200. The noise was driving me crazy. Can be easily checked: just reach in the front wheel wells to feel if they are properly secured.

4200 don't have them, just the 3200's.

I didn’t know that. Strange though, since discs and calipers are similar. Or perhaps something to do with the additional heat generated by the turbo’s?

I think it is because they used one of the ducts for the engine air intake and so didn’t have the air supply.
