Whirring noise from rear of 4200

This is an issue I've ran with for a while - it's going in for a service soon but I thought I'd canvass opinion first.

When I steer, slowly to the right or left, I can hear a whirring noise that appears to be coming from the back. The noise does not appear when driving in a straight line. It happens in both reverse and when going forwards.

I can't see anything visibly catching. I had new handbrake shoes fitted a few months back and they didn't notice anything. But - there is a definite whirring noise - almost sounds like the dynamo on a push bike!

Any thoughts or ideas??? Common? Expected?

Cheers

Mark, is it speed related or rev related?

More precise description.......metallic like........or high pitched etc....

Only happens when turning /steering?.....if so check power steering fluid?!

Speed and only really noticeable at low speeds - like reversing in car park or turning into street slowly. It's a low pitched noise and one I thought I was imagining until a friend asked if that noise was my car!

The noise is coming from the rear so I was assuming not the steering fluid??!

Ok...so not a whine.....from front...ruled that out......

Sounds more like a rubbing....and sure the H/B shoes fitted ok....you put in correct shoes and not 3200 shoes if refurbed?

Checked your gearbox fluid level?

Not an early wheel bearing failure type of noise?

I bought brand new shoes - missed the thread on here re the returns! Cost fortune. Think they were installed fine as I'm sure i noticed this noise before that.

The gear box oil was changed at last service but I'll check that.

Not sure re the wheel bearing as to what noise that would make? Is a wheel bearing on the 4200 expensive??

Diff or torque tube perhaps. A long shot, but apart from bearings and brakes not a lot else rotates back there

Rear wheel bearing would make that sort of noise if they were on there way out and disappear with the weight of the car shifting. You done want to know how much they are either!

Get the car up and spin the wheels and see if there is any play if you try and rock the wheel on its axle top to bottom.

That's what I thought when I read the description, bearing race running free when under certain types of load could be quite rattly and high pitched, they get grumbly at lower rpms.

Thanks for the replies. I'll get it checked.

The noise is at low speed - nothing at a higher speed?

My bet would be a bearing. Have had the same with mine, though at the front rather than the back. Easy enough to replace, but not cheap.

Have you noticed any vibration at higher speed? Slight play from a blown bearing could cause this.

As it's only audible at slow turn speeds, ask someone to stand and listen as you drive around them and see if you can hear if it's one side rather than the other.

Have you have any nasty pot hole experiences recently?
