Windscreen polishing

Anyone have any experience of polishing scratches out of their windscreen? My car is getting on in age and every summer I notice in certain situations the windscreen is covered in tiny scratches, I guess this is years of stones skimming off the surface and leaving their mark.

I've been looking at products and there does seem to be a few on the market for removing these. I wasn't sure if a standard rubbing/cutting compound would do the job and I don't want to leave it worse than when I start.

I once used 1200 grade wet and dry with Tcut as a lubricant then buffed it with G3 using a rotary buffer then washing it in Sarsons vinegar and fairy liquid. Spooky

becareful using machine polisher on windscreen, you could heat the clear coat between the glass sheets and cause this to go a milky colour, once this happens its a new screen...

just keep the machine to a low speed or keep it moving across the panel, a DA will also be alot better than rotarty

Be careful,Ive tried this in the past too...you can end up with an halo effect from the polishing only noticeable driving at night..

I think i may try the p1200 with plenty of soapy water, followed by a cutting compound and finally a glass polish, just a small area. If it all goes pete tong then a new screen may be in order.

I would be tempted to start higher and work back, maybe 2000 or even 3000 if you can get it.

Did this last year with a kit from ebay. Cerium oxide paste and a little velcro disc to pop in a drill.

It worked astonishingly well, but did take about 4 hours. Kept everything wet but make sure you mask everything cos it's horrid stuff to get off the rest of the car.

I just used an electric drill, and made sure everything kept nice and cool.

Any issues sourcing replacement screens from the usual windscreen replacement companies when big nasty stones do their worst?

My black GS had a new windscreen fitted last October. The invoice from Lancaster for the screen alone was £1,700.
