Something of a hokey cokey moment. I was a little worried when the tacho soared towards the redline before I realised that the back was no longer connected to the road :)

They work well, but buy them from Roady or similar in France. Fraction of the price you'd pay in UK. Just check it's not an aluminium roof though...

I had a vague fear the roof was aluminium but I've just been down to the garage to check and a magnet sticks to it - so that's good.

No, I actually have a pair of magnetic ski holders in my cave in CHX but the problem is my Super 7s won't fit, they're too fat. I'll have to have a google around.

The other problem is stuff gets nicked like nobody's business in Chamonix. If it's not screwed down it will walk. One mate had a EUR €20 twenty-year-old fridge stolen.

So much for my excuses, it looks like I'm on the hunt for a spare set of rims now :)

After a quick blat through the icy, muddy, wet & twisty bits of a single-track road over the N. Yorks moors, I am sold on the (relatively) epic grip the winters give compared to standard tyres in cold conditions. Back end is a lot more predictable and gradual even if it still steps out a little.

Above 110 on the motorway still feels like steering in jelly, but braking was fine.

Not sure if they make sense in Central London, but once the temperatures drop, maybe they will...especially round the hilly bits of Hampstead & highgate.

Well second and third gears have been getting slippy under full acceleration so getting my winter tyres fitted. They are surprisingly good and will make the next four months Maserati friendly.

You should put it away for the winter months and buy a cheap runabout for the bad weather.....

Sage advice...I'll probably keep my flies well and truly zipped and just eat chocolate instead for 4 months as well.

;-)

Thats what I intend to do.......got a male chastity belt for Xmas.......snug fit....though.....;)

But couldn't go as far as daily chocolate.....;)

The first time I fitted them I could not believe how good they were, plus they last a long, long time. Have two 4 AWD cars with them on as we'll and they make a big difference to them too, especially to braking performance.

I've only really used my winters on the Christmas party weekend but first impressions are great, they feel a little 'floaty' at first I guess because of the cut blocks moving around but you just drive through that. Chris Bassett reported this but perhaps more so than mine; I have Bridgestones, not sure what Chris got, his is also a spyder.

Mine are Continentals, Newton. Full winters with the mountain & snowflake symbol so may be more floaty...

The floatiness definitely seems to be the blocks moving, certainly the grip is there when needed, it just feels a bit lairy above 110.

Mine seemed floaty 50-70 then much more like summers after that but I only had a couple of moments of madness to base that assumption upon; I mean during the parade lap as that was private road :tt:

Chris - you find these are beneficial in London? We hardly get any snow plus so far this year its been pretty warm for December. I find my standard Pirellis are ok on wet roads.

Snow tyres dont really come into there own until below about 6C, they are probably too soft above that.

I haven't found them to be better in the city so far, Rags...except that they are a bit better for avoiding kerbs as they stick out a little more than my Falkens did.

I'm expecting them to be more worthwhile when the temperature falls, and I've had good use of them out in the countryside. Also, we live at the top of a steep hill, and I'm looking forward to the snow...if it ever comes.
