oh ****, so now my car will be stolen by a spotty nerd with a laptop who will hit the first tree because the wishbones will fall off the car, and no doubt sue me for his injuries. probably more secure to just remove the throttle body and put it in my brief case. this stuff is really worriying, and no surprise they tried to stop them publishing it, as now this is out every tom dick and harry will try it.

A few months ago a guy on another forum was selling a M5, fairly new one

2 guys came to look at it , took it for a drive then said they had a few more to look at

That evening he's watching TV and sees his car come past the window

While they were there one had distracted him asking questions about the engine while the other took the info he needed from the OBD port to program a key

It was a known fault with BMWs which was cured with a software update but no recall which is a disgrace

The guy was really annoyed with BMW because it'd been in to them a few times but they hadn't updated the software

I've got a defender that's as secure as a box of chocolates so when parked it's always got a 360 degree steering wheel lock and a pedal lock on

Only affects QPs.... . Guess we have our own cause celebre now with Masterati to join wishbonegate. I guess I'll also try and dig out my old steering wheel lock from the 1980s too!. Belt and braces..

Sounds more like a theoretycal attack that a practical one.
If they have to sniff the data between the key and immo a few times, then they need to target the same car several times on its startup procedure.
They also have to be very close and using a giant antenna (Like a big can of pringles) to be able to eavesdrop, making them easy to spot.

However, if the manufacturers are dumb enough to be using short keys in the encryption system, then yes a brute force attack will only take a few minutes to suceed.

They don't speak English at Maserati HQ so no response Chris. They only speak Euro, Dollar, Yen, Dirham.......

I like the WishboneGate thing. What about EndFloatGate or the catchy ThrottlePotentiometerGate? :)
