So, having been away for a few days its time to sort out the front brakes before the dreaded MOT! I just want to add my thanks to MaseratiV8 for his excellent research and add (in my 100% un-qualified opinion) that I agree that the 550 discs are a match. For anyone who still needs persuading, or who has just joined the thread, here is my reasoning:
There has previously been much talk about the Ferrari 456 discs, but these are not perfect for 3 main reasons, as points out:
1) They are not drilled
2) The bell flange thickness is 8mm. As MaseratiV8 confirms with his measurements it should be 7mm. This would have the effect of putting the wheel 1mm further out!
3) Some people have questioned the offset which would put the disc slightly off centre between the pads in the caliper (although the drawings show this to be the same on both discs)
So through lots of maseratiV8s hard work we have now come to the 550 discs:-
1) They are drilled (and very nicely too!)
2) The bell flange thickness is the correct 7mm.
3) MaseratiV8 has measured the offset and it matches, and to verify his measuring skills it ties in with the drawings!
The only difference between the 2 discs that has not been confirmed (unless anyone can tell us differently) is the internal diameter of the 'bell' on the 456 disc is 163mm and and the 550 disc is 164mm. Not knowing which is the correct measurement for the 32/4200 I am assuming that as everything else matches on the 550 disc, that this is the correct measurement. That and the fact that that MaseratiV8 had no problems fitting it, and that Deano has also fitted it to a 3200 as well.
For anyone who needs it, the drawing for the wrong F456 disc are at
http://bremboaftermarket.com/En/Car_Disc_Catalogue/Catalogue_Detail.aspx?ModelIDMaster=13888
and the correct F550 disc is at
http://bremboaftermarket.com/En/Car_Disc_Catalogue/Catalogue_Detail.aspx?ModelIDMaster=13894
Why am I saying all this? Well, following Maserati v8s initial post I had been looking into brakes international ( brakesint.co.uk) >They list a disc for the 3200 as their part number BDS5672, but as has been pointed out this is also the part number they list for the 456. For the 550 they list part number BDS5670 which is £78.69 +VAT= £94.43. I have been in touch with them and they have sent me the technical drawings for them.... and they are the brembo drawings from the links above with the titles removed! I will speak to them tomorrow to confirm that they are Brembo, and not a pattern match that has just copied the drawings too!
So I too am sure that the Brembo 09.68020.20 discs, Ferrari Part no 169765 is the correct OEM front disc.
I see Belfast Brakes are researching the Ferodo disc, DDF1074. The only picture I can find for that disc suggests it may not be drilled, but pictures are not always correct. Details of the Ferodo range for the 550 are here :
http://www.fmecat.eu/selProd2.asp?prdgrp=2&langID=1&engseal=0
but clicking on the link does not provide sufficient detail to confirm another match. (Federal Mogul seem to be a parent company for ferodo).
Exploring that site and
http://www.ferodoracing.com/catalogue/detail_car_tuning.php?code=FDS998&cat=brake_pads
has suggested the following 'specification matches' that may be usefull, which Im sure have already been posted somewhere!
Front discs for F550: Brembo 09.68020.20, Ferrari 169765, Ferrodo DDF1074, Necto WN1138
Front Pads for M3200: Brembo 07.8301.66, Mintex MDB1752, Ferrodo FDB998 FDS998 or FQT998 (depending on compound)
I cannot categorically confirm the matches above, but they seem to be correct (if you believe the manufacturers!)
However, Like parisien I will be following in MaseratiV8s footsteps and getting the Brembo discs tommorrow!
I'll just end by thanking everyone who has helped get to where we are, and point out again that I am not a mechanic, have nothing to do with the motor trade, and I'm happy to be corrected!
